Northmen/Northern Armor?

What is the armor that the Northerner wear called? It's seen on every soldier from Robb Stark to the lowliest guardsman, it's made of leather with studs in it, but it's been called multiple things like a coat of plates, studded leather, brigandine etc, what is it though?

i think studded leather. i think is two layers of leather, with at least the outer layer boiled and hardened. in between the leather layers is a little filling, like wool, and a relatively thin layer of iron or steel, with studs poking out through the outer layer of leather.
