This is part of my guessing; the magic went rogue post doom. Some people probably survived in holes, unable to leave. Magic was left to go unchecked after having been contained by the bloodmages for centuries.

Euron returned to the Iron Islands after two years of banishment. Considering that he went as far as Asshai (maybe even further) with a ship, he did not spend more than three months in Valyria, if he really was there. I can imagine that he survived there that long without a dragon (tho most likely not in the heartlands, or I dunno).
But there have to be others as well. His people can't speak, of course, his visit to Valyria might be a reason why George made Euron's entire crew tongueless.
Exactly. I think it's also worth noting that Valyria was so incredibly, impossibly wealthy(especially in magic) that you probably wouldn't have to go far into Valyria proper to find some extremely compelling things, and it must not at all have been worth the risk of more trips. I'm very surprised they didn't make it out of there with more.
I also think he may have gotten the horn from other parties who HAD been to Valyria, near it, or from one of their closer outposts like Elyria/Tolos. I really, REALLY hope we hear more from Euron about the current state of Valyria. If the Unsullied do take the demon road back instead of the sea I expect we will hear much and more. -
My guess is Fire Wyrms. We know they lived in the fourteen flames and therefore they probably survived the doom... But the magic may have done horrible things to some of them. If Valyrian magic made dragons through fire wyrm/wyvern breeding, what the hell did it do to some of these fire wyrms when said magic ran rampant post-doom?
You also have to consider that they were gone a LONG TIME. It probably took weeks, at max, for Balerion to reach Valyria. They probably didn't go straight there, but something tells me that they were there most of the time. After all, in all of Jaeherys' investigations they never hear about a dragon.
That means Aerea spent real time in Valyria, as did Balerion, and somehow made it BACK. TOGETHER. As in Aerea didn't just die along the way, Balerion and her must have bonded etc otherwise I don't see him sticking around to help her flee.
We are never going to get much more of the story of what happened to them, but I do think we see more post-doom Valyria through one lens or another. And it sounds horrifically amazing, this was a really sad, but big high point of the book imo. -
1) Very often hunched, from pain. He isn't a short but not very impressive physically or with the impression that he ever was in the way that someone like Jaime is. Decently handsome but closer to Quentyn than Arianne. My opinion is from book descriptions, I have only ever seen 1 depiction of him, from the board game card. More in the next since they are related
2) Doran is pretty much completely grayed hair-wise and in general with entirely different, more square facial features. I didn't consider much casting before a character appeared on the show(though I finished all the books before season 2), though it did happen as with what I thought Oberyn for example would look like onscreen
3) I've never seen him in anything else as far as I know. I think he is perfect for the role and a great actor from what I've seen.
4) I've heard almost nothing about him in interviews aside from before he actually appeared, in regards to casting reviews before the showing.

Hi Everyone! I've been perusing these forums for a while, and finally decided to join! I have been reading A Song of Ice and Fire on and off for the past couple of years. I'm currently on A Feast for Crows. I've also been watching Game of Thrones since it debuted in 2011. I also really love the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. I've been going through bit a rough time lately. My mom passed away 3 weeks ago :( Reading, along with prayer, has really helped with the grieving process. Though it is going to take a very long time.
I'm so sorry; I lost my mom 7 years back when I was 17 so I know sorry does nothing and is in some ways the worst thing to hear.
You never really lose it all and you're not supposed to I don't think; you're supposed to miss those you love. I say love present tense because that's the thing you don't lose

I read CS Lewis' whole Narnia series as well as the screwtape letters, the latter of which was my favorite of his works by far though you can't really compare Narnia to anything else in a lot of ways. Read Fellowship of the ring a few months ago and looooooved it, I had tried reading it while younger as well as the two towers but never got very far in fellowship until recently, even though Hobbit was devoured greedily at the same young age ;D

Or at the very least, didn't just flee when being so grievously wounded, but allowed Aerea to mount him again OR he was wounded while in flight. Considering there are almost certainly no flight-capable dragons there I find that unlikely. Regardless her being able to be close to him speaks to a bond much like the primitive one with Dany in the pit and Drogon.
