We don't bring in real world moral and law into it, just the laws the book offers. He deserted his post, he earned death, as they all know in the NW. That's it. Others might not see it that way, which is fine, that's the point of discussion, but don't bring in that crappy excuse. The Law also states that Stannis should die, and Ned, and Brandon, and Robert, and Bran, and Arya, and just about most named characters in the series. "It's the law" is an extremely weak excuse when discussing the moral ramifications of sending an innocent man to suffer a life of misery on the Wall and then kill him when he tries to escape when justice wasn't dispensed properly in the first place. Daeron should have never been sent to the Wall and was betrayed by the Westerosi justice system, I don't blame him for escaping as soon as he saw the opportunity.
