Glenn Close Boards 'Sherlock' Director's First Feature

Colm McCarthy, the Scottish director of U.K. TV smash hits such as Sherlock, Doctor Who and Peaky Blinders has lined up six-time Oscar-nominated Glenn Close for his debut feature.

She Who Brings Gifts, which was announced Monday by U.K.-based Altitude Film Sales, is adapted by novelist and comic book author Mike Carey from his best-selling 2014 book The Girl With all the Gifts. Set in a dystopian future in which much of humanity has been wiped out by a deadly fungus, it tells the story of Melanie, an infected girl with a genius-level IQ who is "full of questions about the world."

Due to shoot in the U.K. in May, She Who Brings Gifts will also star Gemma Arterton (Tamara Drewe, The Voices) and Paddy Considine (Pride, Tyrannosaur). It's being produced by Camille Gatin (Shadow Dancer) and Angus Lamont, who co-produced last year's multi-award winning '71 by Yann Demange. The film has been developed with support from the BFI Film Fund.

"She Who Brings Gifts is a smart take on the sci-fi genre and with a humanity, which will draw a young adult audience and those already aware of Mike Carey's best-selling novel," said Will Clarke, co-CEO and chairman at Altitude. "With the great cast that has come on board, we have a highly commercial film which can cut through to a broad audience."

Added co-producer Lamont: "It's hugely exciting to combine Mike Carey's truly original script and Colm McCarthy's dynamic yet sensitive style with such a terrific cast."

She Who Brings Gifts was one of the selected screenplays on last year's Brit List, a compendium of scripts by non-U.S. writers set up to complement the Black List. Previous titles have included The King's Speech, My Week With Marilyn and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
