I tend to think it's irrelevant, which in GRRM's intentions probably was meant to hide the relevance of the following sentence better. The only part which might be of some relevance imo is the B bit, as 'the longer you hide youself = deny your Stark identity, the sterner the penance = you'll lose a part of yourself forever / become a stern assassin / die in the end' or something on that line, but to be honest, I fee like it's a bit of a stretch.
