Maithanet
4 minutes ago, Gaston de Foix said: If Tyler's goal is to destroy civilization then it makes perfect sense to send members of Fight Club to provoke fights with strangers and lose. Because what that person takes away is that violence IS the way to resolve disputes. You'll win and you'll feel good. And so you'll do it again. I haven't done a ton of analysis of this movie, but I never really thought of it this way. I assumed it was just that asking people to lose a fight requires more sacrifice than winning one, and this club is all about experimenting with pain as enlightenment. Gaston de Foix
I am Jack's wasted life. From an organ to an emotion to the sum of all things human. Which is the wasted life, the previous or the ongoing? Maybe I'm over-analyzing things. Wouldn't be the first time.
Gaston de Foix
Further escalation to threatened murder. How is this part of the path to enlightenment through pain? I guess we'll find out.
Gaston de Foix
Why does a weaker person need to latch on to a stronger person. What is that? Again with the symmetry provoking uncomfortable questions for them both.
Gaston de Foix
Tyler reminds Ed that he can't talk about him. Is Tyler even real? Is he a figment of Ed's imagination?
Gaston de Foix
This thing that Tyler does where he mouths lines that Ed repeats. That's what schiziophrenics do. Usually its just voices though.

Gaston de Foix
"We guard you while you sleep. Do not fuck with us." Tyler Durden is the apostle of the great unwashed and the commissioner of police is the elite, effete wimp who inevitably gives in to physical intimidation. Meanwhile Ed has become "Jack's inflamed sense of rejection". So organ -> emotion -> wasted life -> "rejection" i.e., the thing or feeling that has been expelled. The Ed that voices these thoughts doesn't inhabit his own body or his own sense of self anymore.
Gaston de Foix
And Ed loses control. Completely.
Gaston de Foix
Stop controlling everything and just let go. And the car overturns. It's the logical step for a cult that exalts violence and/or considers pain the path to enlightenment to see self-destruction as the ultimate act of freedom. Gaston de Foix
"Tyler isn't here. Tyler went away. Tyler gone. " Marla's reaction could be equally valid if she thinks Ed is Tyler or if Tyler is a figment of his imagination. I personally lean to the former theory. Gaston de Foix
Is Tyler my bad dream or am I Tyler's? Good question. Waiting to find out. The setting up franchises all over the country sounds exactly as Tyler characterized Ed's dad's behavior of starting a family and then abandoning it.
