Ned revisted

A lot of focus on what ned should have done as hand but assuming all that is set in stone by the gods (grmm) 

What would you have done differently as warden of the north before that? Lets say hes just heard his old pal is dead and he knows the king will be comming in 6 months or so..whst would you put in motion?

Myself

-bethrothed robb to a maderly to secure the north

-sansa was also well overdue by westeros standards for a match so a southern lord , a tyrell , qyentyn martell , a valelords son etc

-arya isnt gonna be happy in a normal house so arrnage for a bear island,  or a reed (jojen?)  Or a  dorne match up (trystane martell Etc) explain to her these cultures will let her train as she pleases

-dont leave jon without explaining his secret its not right on the kid and force cat to swear to be kind to the boy

 

-send scores of homeless,orphans and poor as well as your own troops to fix up the tower and moat catlin ,  a long winter is comming and ordinary people.will be glad to have a roof over their heads and it kills 2 birds with one stone by getting those structures ship shape again 

 

-send cat and robb round the hill tribes and invite them to winter town early, ensure winterfell and its surroundings are filled with allies, send some of them to help fix up the mini forts on the wall and they can live and guard those sections. Give orders to the most northern lords (karstak and umber etc) to bring their men north to the wall,.fix it up , scout,  reinforce.it by ordering boltons forces etc if the talk of a new king  beyond the wall is true

 

-no word has come from the iron isles in years, while theon is a good guarantee id ask manderly to send all his fleet to seaguard, patrols to begin  between there and  the northest part of the north just to be ultra safe. Hire fishingboats and smugglers to sneak into the ironborn harbours to sniff around for info

-fix any outstanding issues like lady dustin being unmarried, her house cant die with her and her dead husband.

I agree with most of them but we should assume that there had been about 17 years of peace and Iron Islands were silent all the while. Moat Cailin had been a ruin for hundreds of years and the part about Winterfell should have been Robb's task for inviting the mountain clans so soon means more mouths to feed. Winterfell was safe even after Ned's departure untill Robb marched south.

True but that silence should have been a warning ..threre should have been constant contact with balon about his son and how hed like him raised etc! The fact the lord of the iron isles seemed to care not at all should have bee  troubling (ned youd think would want the boy to fit in if he went back too)

 

Peace or not the mountain clan idea would help with the manpower needed to rebuilf moat catlin  the tower and the walls watch forts etc . With talk of a king beyond the wall it would have helped the watch and the rebuilt structures could house men, women and children during the comming super long winter.

The extra mouths to feed is a serious issue yeah but spreading the clanmen out helps plus maybe at the wall they could help cut down the  overgrown forrest...the watch can sell the extra tonnes of  wood onto bravos for preserved food ! With the extra naval.patrols fishermen on the west coast could probably be talked into sailing furthers and staying out longer for bigger catches! And finaly a nice big fat dowry for sansa ned could ask highgarden for food by the tonne not silver!
