What cast members read the books?

Recommended Posts

From what I have seen in interviews, Emilia Clarke has read them all, Kit Harrington had read all but ADwD (I'm not sure if he has read it by now).

Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey don't want to read them. Nicolaj Coster Waldau's mother has read them and has told him what happens. Maisie Williams' parents have read them and Richard Madden's father too.

Charles Dance has said that the books are too thick for him. And Michelle Fairley has read the Catelyn chapters. That's all I know.

Lena Headey said (multiple times) that she hasn't read them but her mother has and doesn't want her to tell her what will happen next.

It didn't work apparently since she hinted in a recent interview that she is aware of one of Cercei's of the final scenes in the books.

Peter Dinklage, Charles Dance, Lena Headey, Natalie Dormer, Hannah Murray, Conleth Hill, John Bradley and Liam Cunningham ("I read a book once") have definitely not read them. Maisie Williams' parents have read them and told her what happens in her storyline. Sophie Turner has read the Sansa storyline but not the books in full. Carice Van Houten says she has the books at home but hasn't had time to read them (this was around the time Season 3 was airing). According to Comic Con, she apparently still hasn't got around to it. George R.R. Martin had gotten Sibel Kekilli an English copy of A Game of Thrones and she promised she would read it but hadn't during her time filming. Iain Glen was supposedly encouraged not to read beyond Book 1 by D&D.

Michelle Fairley has said she initially read all of the Catelyn chapters but then went back and read the full novel which corresponded with the season she was filming. Alfie Allen has read the first two books but not beyond that. Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie have read the first four novels. Richard Madden seemed to do a book per season too. In contrast to the Season 5 panel where barely anyone has read the books, the entirety of the Season 2 panel had at least read up to that point in the series timeline (the season 2 panel was made up of Michelle Fairley, Richard Madden, Rose Leslie, Emilia Clarke and Alfie Allen). Nikolaj has never really given a straight answer (the bit about his parents reading to him was a joke) but he does seem to have read to a point. He mentions that Book!Jaime was aroused by Brienne in the hottub on that episode's audio commentary.

So the actors who have likely read the entire book series are: Gwendoline Christie (confirmed several times, most recently at Comic Con), Ian McElhinney (D&D have been dismissive of his case for the character, they are quoted as saying they wanted to kill the character more after he wrote them a letter), Aidan Gillen, Emilia Clarke (she apparently reads per season but keeps a copy of the book with her when filming), Nathalie Emmanuel (another who reads by season, she says she had a hard time putting the books down), Ron Donachie and Finn Jones. That's a very small list.

In a pre-Season 3 EW interview, Ellie Kendrick said she read the books before taking the part because she didn't want to do any nude scenes.
