who do the ladies of the iron islands marry?

Recommended Posts

For the last century, the Iron Islands were peaceful, they probably made a living fishing and trading... they were well on their way to integrate in the Westeros society, until Balon had other ideas... Judging from the way Victarion reacted to the affair between his wife and Euron it shows that the ironborn care about their wives just as much as the other Westerosi. Of course it's a matter of property, a status thing to have a highborn wife and to protect her. In my mind, a huge difference could come from the status of the bastards, if they had equal rights with the others, then the importance of a wife would diminish, but we see very little about this. All the important figures on the island are legitimate.

Harras Harlaw's mother was a Serrett of Silverhill from deep inland in the Westerlands, and her husband, his father, was a younger son of Lord Harlaw.

Well, they live near a river that seems to be a Mander´s branch, they may remember the raids of the Ironborn who attacked the North, Westernlands and the Reach not so long ago.

Given that we know of three noble Ironborn Ladies in total, the sample size doesn't warrant any prediction. And that's Asha, her mother and her aunt.

This. There really is not enough data to even speculate.

There haven't been raiders up the Mander in over 2000 years.

I imagine that the only Ironborn men who marry Greenland Women are full Lords. Marrying to a lands and tile, even if it's less than fertile and prospective islands, is an attractive option, especially for younger daughters.

Yes and let's just remember Jane Austen and how her books were all about getting daughters married off to some good match with some property and title.

Any mediocre or lower noble family would easily give a daughter which is unlikely to get a better match. All seems to be more prestigous than an unmarried spinster that needs to be nourished, clothed and is aside of political marriage pretty useless.

In some countries like India for example there is still today thinking like that widely spread and China slowly lacks women thanks to their politics.

It could also be seen a kind of insurance contract to marry off a daughter and the families properties being spared some raidings in the following years and generation. If the Iron born don't like their greenlandish wifes they can easily have a bunch of salt wifes ... so who cares where they are from?
