Salafi Stannis
Just a few odd similarities I picked up: The northern half of an island nation (the North, Scotland) which has been approx. 300 years (since appox. 0AL, 1707 AD) tries to become independent in a campaign (Northern rebellion, Yes campaign) spearheaded by a person who is ruler of that region (Robb Stark, Alex Salmond), but is still a subordinate to the overall ruler of the country (The King of Westeros, the Monarch of the UK), but are in reality ruled by people who are not officially the heads of state, but still run the country (Tywin Lannister, David Cameron). They want to be independent because want more powers which they feel are deprived of them by the southerners who rule them (the King and Small Council, the Prime Minister and Westminster), whom some in the north (a lot of Northern lords, some Scottish nationalists) feel that they are better than. The campaign fails, which results in the ruler of the region (Robb Stark, Alex Salmond) losing his position (Lord of Winterfell, First Minister of Scotland). Talleyrand
I'd say the main difference is that Scotland is real I'm sure our continued association with Wales is slowly rendering us at least part fictional
Salafi Stannis
You seem very dedicated to this theory... Someone said it wouldn't last very long in the general asoiaf forum, so I thought I'd post it here to be safe.
Slurms McKenzie
(Lord of Winterfell, First Minister of Scotland). Lord of Edinburgh, Warden of the Highlands and Lord Paramount of Scotland. It has a ring to it, I must admit.
polishgenius
I think it's incredible that a fictional place based on the history of a real one bears some similarity to the real place that it's based on.
