  1. people spending their money insanely fast does happen
  2. We know that the Gift supported the Watch for many thousands of years at its full strength, could the land do so again if the people were available to settle it and man the castles?
  3. thats not a currency problem, thats a fools with money problem. Robert then Anguy spending it like water is consistent with them being fools Loras giving the prize to The Hound for saving his life on the other hand is entirely good sense, his life probably is worth that much particularly to him I agree its as pure as they can make it
  4. I disagree that the stag is silver plated, it would need to be near pure silver for it to be worth fifty copper ones a fairly large dragon explains the gap rather better than the idea of a very low value stag does the ratio between it and the copper coins. thats why I suggested something like the five guinea coin for the dragon
  5. I'm confused by rose a lot, he does a number of very smart things but then he also does or allows a lot of very stupid shit
  6. I think that the point of view in the books gives us an incorrect idea of how common gold is there being 80 million gold dragons in existence doesn't mean that every other person has one of them, it means that a very very small number of very rich people have lots and most people have none I suspect the stag is near pure silver, fifty coppers to one silver is already rather high after all, that would put a copper star at one half farthing for a six pence stag.
  7. using jeyne as fake arya was a good idea until ramsey fucked it up by being ramsey
  8. the fact that the ironborn deserve it helps honestly I have no idea why the north in particular hasn't killed off the ironborn by now
  9. well six pence isn't incompatible with that depending on when, where and who most people in the seven kingdoms probably get about that a day if they are doing well
  10. it has to be worth enough to make copper coins worth having I prefer five guineas for the dragon and therefore six pence for the stag,
  11. Yes, in fact having a decent amount of silver immediately as opposed to gold later plays into his plans to bribe various people at harrelhall. Rose was doing really well until the failure of the blackwater lost the north the chance to win their fight
  12. Honestly Roose got the exact wife he should want under the circumstances
  13. there are other houses with similiar numbers of troops that don't have to divide the dowry pot a hundred ways shes not going to live long enough for it to matter but yes under normal circumstances there would be a good chance of multiple kids out of her
  14. despite westeros famously having a lot of gold mines the gold to silver price ratio is incredibly high based on the value of the coinage, why do you think this is?
  15. I doubt either place would be selling it to the ironborn, if for no other reason than the others could out bid them
  16. He could still get a much better one that could have been a factor yes
  17. Shipbuilders rarely export wood, in fact actual riots have been started because shipyards refused to give needed supplies to the ships legimately docked there so the crews came and took them. if the ironborn are buying wood its from the north, they aren't using it and they are culturally much closer to the ironborn than they are the southrons. in fact the north would probably let the ironborn set up a logging operation there if they paid the relevant taxes and fees for use of the land.
  18. Walder whines about everything whether gold should be very cheap its not based on the ratio between dragons and stags, her dowry is at most 300 dragons which is about what you would expect the daughter of a knight to have not one of the freys. of course Roose chooses the fat one, he gets more money, is less likely to catch the pox and he doesn't expect her to live long enough to start costing him money. its still an insult for the lord of a great house to be offered marriage to a girl who is worth so little While Walder and Roose are arguably of the same status Fat Walda is a very long way below that, on their level dowries of tens or even hundreds of thousands of dragons would not be uncalled for.
  19. Certainly, even something like Lord Tywin is only going to more effective than having eight 100 oar warships a very small amount of the time, which is one of the reasons that the largest war galleys we know were used in battles were I believe tens not forties Lord Tywin might have ten rowers per row.
  20. cersei believes him entirely suitable for her purposes
  21. not if you have any sense as the Grand Maester is a kings adviser, he is not a member of the kings household and in fact serves under oaths to another organisation entirely. there is also the practical fact that the Grand Maester is concerned with the realm and is unlikely to have the time.
  22. the arbour is likely importing wood not exporting it besides if they were willing to pay for the wood the north would sell it to them, its just they aren't
  23. It is for nobility and if your marrying up as Fat Walda is then its even important to have an impressive dowry 300lbs of silver might be worth as much as the fifty dragons Tyrion tipped each dwarf for Joffrey's show
