Simple question, not meant to be disrespectful in anyway, do you think GRRM is the best author to finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series? Again I should reiterate that I mean no disrespect to GRRM, he created a world I fell in love with, so I have nothing but the utmost respect for him. But he also started to work on that world almost 30 years ago when he was 43 and when the first book was published he was around 48. He’s 70 now, and just like his characters change, surely he’s changed in the last 30 years. Ideas he once had, have been scrapped, (ex. 5 year jump) and changed into new ideas. I mean the story he had in his mind at 40 has evolved into something more. Neither better nor worse, just changed. Books 4 and 5 were very different than books 1-3. Not just the stylistic changes and his goals with the storylines, but the books at their core felt very different. Through the years and rereads i’ve come to appreciate AFFC and ADwD, maybe even moreso than the first three. Certainly the last few will be changed as well. His closeness with the show will likely bleed into the books. Not that it’s a bad thing, but it will bleed in a bit and that will change his writing a bit. Whether it’s specific scenes and characters, or trying to grapple with the task of balancing the story and still pleasing the mass audience he now has. I’m sure when he was putting the story together, he never dreamed he’s be writing it for this many people. And furthermore there’s the challenge of engaging an audience that’s already seen the broad stokes of the story play out and know where it’s going. Surely all those things will change his writing a bit. Lastly, there’s the wait. It’s been almost 7 years since the last book. And 4 and 5 were truely one act of the saga. Which means since ASOS we’ve gotten one act in 18 years. With the show, the offshoot books, the growing fame and responsibilities that come with it, it’s understandable to a point, but most of that will still likely be around for the next few years at least. Especially if HBO picks up spin offs. So I don’t see the pace quickening before the end. I’ve been thinking about it myself. So just posting to see how other people feel I guess. I’m ecstatic to get a finished GRRM story, and certainly will love it. Selfishly though, I also love the story and world and want the best version of it and wondering myself if it’d be from him.

Is it ever confirmed anywhere in the cannon that Cersei somehow had Robert killed by the Boar? I think of it like it’s a given but don’t remember a specific POV where it’s confirmed.

That makes sense, I do feel like I should clarify, I’m not actually asking him to hand it off. That would never happen and shouldn’t happen, it’s his and his to finish. I’m just wondering if people personally think he’s the best to finish it for their own personal enjoyment. I think the show’s a bit different just because you have to make certain character and plot specific changes among others whereas an author would have the free reign GRRM has without some of the restrictions a television show / movie create. But that’s another topic. I do think in the end, for me, he probably is the best but then again I’m not attached to any other authors that could do it.

Little Questions That Don't Fit Anywhere Else Part 3

In the most recent episode, when the NK 'marks' Bran. Are people generally assuming that scene was in the present day?

    [Spoilers] EP601

I'm confused as to what your saying. I mean I understand that you think Brienne's allegiance will be called into question and she'll not choose the Starks /Sansa. Thinking that though wouldn't affect how empowered Sanda was or wasn't. Her ability to make a decision, feel like she has the right to make that decision and control her own future is what makes her empowered. If u think Brienne's going to switch allegiance, betray Sansa then that is just poor decision making by her. I don't agree that she'll betray her but of course you could be right, we don't know what's going to happen yet. I'm interested to know who you think she'll betray Sansa for and how and/ or why? Just the situation around the betrayal?

    [Spoilers] EP601

Yeah, idk, they made it a point to show that Sansa had to look at Theon and get his ok before telling Brienne she would accept her. IMO this scene was developing the avenue for Sansa to take control, but that she didn't know how to yet. She needed to be saved once again, had to ask Theon first if it was ok to take on Brienne, Podrick had to help her with what she was supposed to say, etc. She's had people controlling her every move and playing "protector" since season 1. It is going to take some time for her to really take charge and make decisions without needing some type of permission. But I think they will play bookends with this and show her here and then show her at the end of the season really taking on a leadership role. At least I hope so because I enjoy rooting for her and think she'd do well.

Future of House Westerling and House Spicer

Did Sybelle leave with Jeyne, I don't remember? If the party gets attacked like many think in the prolouge of TWOW and the BwB does win / take prisoners, i could see a good scenario. Raynald could of linked up with the BwB and he could end up being there watching if they hang Sybelle and maybe Jeyne.

Thanks much, so that white raven in aCoK meant autumn right? And then the white raven in the epilogue of aDwD means winter?

    Small Questions v. 10105

At the beginning of the books they say this has been a very long summer, does it say anywhere how long it's been? I believe they say Bran has only ever known summer so it atleast like 7 or 8 years right?

    Small Questions v. 10105

Quick question, don't have the book in front of me and can't remember if I'm letting the show affect my memory. when Benjen goes to Winterfell is there accounts of him and Ned talking? Obviously a Ned POV or maybe another Stark see's them speaking or such?

    [No Spoilers] EP510 Discussion

Actually I got the same comments from unsullied friends, like "Jon is a tough lose, not to many other characters I care about left." Also, unsullied friends were confused about the Dothraki and Dany's current relationship with them. Wonder if that's a common theme or not. Few comments from them were, 'how are their so many Dothraki, there were way less in the desert with Dany'. And also 'ok, Khal Drogo was a Dothraki, so this should be good for her now'

    why was Ladystoneheart cut out

Except for the fact that there is a very good possibility that they know where her storyline is going. GRRM has given them the endgame, and most likely given them this one as well, seeing as it is one of the 2 bigger character cuts (2nd being (f)Aegon). From his quote, don't have it on hand, he said he wouldn't introduce a character without giving them some effect on the endgame, and noted LSH specifically, that she has an effect worthy of him introducing her in the first place. Knowing that they need to cut characters though, even GRRM admits as much, was her effect small enough to cut and/or combine with another character? If her only actions through ADwD are it IMO I'd say probably, however only people who know her future actions (GRRM & probably D&D) would be able to say knowing what's in store.

    why was Ladystoneheart cut out

They are doing casting next season which leads me to believe they are introducing the Riverlands storylines next season. A lot that they have cut they are just really holding off till next season. So in reality the only full storyline they really cut was (f)Aegon and his crew.

    why was Ladystoneheart cut out

True, but false hope also tastes as sweet as mothers milk. Ha, no worries though once Borodin's summer break ends we'll probably have less posts as he's busy with his first year of junior high.

    why was Ladystoneheart cut out

You know he is just going to continue to try and derail threads so he can vent and whine that he doesn't think they are adapting it well and boo hoo he doesn't like it, regardless of it's the appropriate forum or not. I mean, he literally just tried to derail the "best addition to the show, not in the books" thread by guess what, going in and posting sarcastic comments about how they didn't adapt something well and boo hoo he didn't like it.

    why was Ladystoneheart cut out

Thank you for the definition of a good screen adaptation, that's so helpful. And only changing characters motivations are the very definition of poor adaptation. The 3 other things you mentioned are necessary the majority of the time to be a good adaptation. And either way, however you define a good adaptation, it's still 100% completely a matter of opinion if someone thinks a particular story was adapted well.
  19. The Dames do Moan

    why was Ladystoneheart cut out

And there are many people, including myself, who have yet to see a convincing argument that they have not adapted it well. Because it's completely an opinion either way. Either you think they have, you think they haven't, or you think they have done some things well and handled others poorly. And arguments like below, where you say basically characters are doing pretty much the same thing as the books, or removed a minor character and gave it to a bigger character, but OMG they met another character they didn't meet in the books; that's probably not really gonna change people's minds. If you just feel like venting because you don't like it, that's fine too. But don't pretend that you know why D&D changed things cause you literally have no idea.
  20. Do you have the quote and/or chapter you are referring to here?
