theMountainGoat
Ever wondered about the geological history of Westeros and Essos? How were the landmasses connected and when did they split? What created the salt shore in Dorne and which geological event gave the Lannisters the gold instead of the Arryns of the Vale?Did you know that the north and south of Westeros were once separate continents and that at one time Winterfell was situated on a tropical coast? There was also a time 40 million years ago when the Great Other held sway over all the land as far south as where King's Landing is today with a great glacier that would have dwarfed the Wall. All of these fascinating details have been put together by a group of Stanford scientists and can be read in full on their website: Geology of Westeros I'm not a geologist so I can't comment on the validity of any of this but I know we've got a few geologists who post on the board and this subject has come up before so I'm sure this will be of interest to many of you. Free Northman Reborn
Their basic allocation of latitudes is totally incorrect. There is no way that the Wall lies on the Arctic circle. Not with 600 miles of forest lying north of it, and with the fertile farmland of the Gift lying right in its southern shadow. They have placed Westeros around 6-10 degrees too far North.
