Are we expected to take prophecies as facts?

Recommended Posts

I mean we seem to think that Maggy the frog prophecy will turn out true,or the Ptwp prophecy to be true I mean we are arguing about who is the ptwp and not if it is to be trusted.Unless in asoiaf we are meant to take prophecies as things that will certainly happen.

Well it is a fantasy series, isn't it?

I suppose we could preface every theory with ''Supposing their prophecy is accurate...'' but it just seems kind of nonsensical.

Although, it is worth noting that people are substantially less likely to believe in, say the Black Goat of Qohor than they are the Old Gods, or R'hllor. Things that are central to the series are a lot easier to accept as fact, because they seem essential to the characters that have been created.

Words are wind.

But prophesy is a special take. Whether you believe in them or not does not matter, as long as the characters do, they might self fulfill the prophecy.

What Maggy said was a fortune, not a prophecy. However, we have seen elements of it come true, mostly do to Cersei's own actions.

As to the prophecies, GRRM has said we should pay less attention to them and more to Old Nan's stories. That would be easier if we could get Old Nan to finish some of those stories.
