Varys is Merlin

Also not sure if this has come up before, but "Varys" is interesting from an etymological standpoint both in-universe (if that's possible) and out. "Var-" appears in a Valyrian word - "valar" - which is "all men". "Val-" is probably "men", or "man". "-rys" as a suffix appears also, in "dracarys" - the "draca" part presumably refers to dragon ("dragonfire"), implying that "-rys" is a suffix implying "fire". Of course, as a caveat on the interestingness of this, the very notion of "in-universe etymology" is a tad shaky.

However, this would make "Varys" the "man of fire" or "fire man".

This would be somewhat supported by the similarity of "Varys" to "Vyras", which is Lithuanian, where "vyr-" (compare with Swedish "varus") is related to "wer-" (again meaning "man"). For further intrigue, "wer-" is where we get the word "virile", which Varys is clearly not, which is interesting from the standpoint of "Varys is inherently a lie".

Not sure if it's actually true but i was searching for ancient/old celtic names recently and merlyn basically means foreigner apparently. Guess what Varys is.

Not sure where you got that, but to my knowledge, it's inaccurate. Merlin is from an Old French form of Welsh "Myrddhin", which is probably from Old Celtic "Mori-dunon" - literally "of the sea-hill". In turn from "mori", "sea" (consider the word "mere") + "dunom", meaning "hill".

If you say Lord Varys aloud, it sounds like Lord of Aerys. Varys=of Aerys. What if he was Aerys's bastard who he had castrated to prevent the Blackfyre problem?

Just another possibility.

  • 4 weeks later...

And he shaves his head, I seem to recall a merlyn story that said he shaved his head for his hate to fit better, as Varys does for wigs and such etc, he essentially could be anyones bastard or even lost trueborn given the timelines match.

My moneys on him being a secret user of magic even though he hates it (hell say something like "For the benefit of the realm!" If anyone questions it, and he's a liar), having a significant lineage (blackfyre, brightflame, seastar, hell I'd even take a reyne or tarbeck).

"whilst whispers of a certain eunuch's talents crossed the narrow sea and reached the ears of a certain king. A very anxious king, who did not wholly trust his son, nor his wife, nor his Hand, a friend of his youth who had grown arrogant and overproud."

According to this quote, Varys would have come too late for the merlin parallel to work. Though Varys may have had a hand in Jaime joining the KG, the fact that Rhaegar was old enough to have gained Aerys's mistrust, and the description of the relationship between Aerys and Tywin --which took some time to deteriorate-- puts this too close to Tyrion's birth to be truly viable. It would have taken Varys some time to truly gain Aerys’ trust to approach him with a scheme like that. As to why Varys trusted Aerys, why shouldn’t he after Varys had shown himself to be quite a capable gatherer of intelligence.

Varys plays his own game, he showed as much interest in Tyrion as he did in anyone else.
