When you're doing calculus, you can usually say, "Well, that's in the same ballpark I intuitively expected for the escape velocity, so I probably did the math right". When you're doing set theory, you can usually say, "Well, I had no intuition at all about whether this model would have an infinite tower of inaccessible cardinals, and the math looks right".
