OldLordWalder
It occurred to me that the burden of having to hide the (alleged) truth of Jobs birth from Robert probably made Ned really not want to see him. He seems quite uneasy and treats Robert quite formally, while Bobby treats Ned very friendly, unaware of the truth of Lyanas death. I don’t remember if there’s anything written about how they behaved during the Greyjoy rebellion, pretty much the only time they were together after Roberts Rebellion. Ned is described as having a cold outside that you see through the more you get to know (cats pov on meeting him after.brandon) and he is still friendly to bobby b too just hes lacks bobby bs easy charm with others. Its part of roberts personality that hes seemingly friendly, likeable, approachable etc and wins over even former enemiew ..he may not be the warrior he once was but he and renly still have that easy manner + charm. Add in once the war was over they were expected to settle into to their respective roles as leaders ,husbands and fathers leaving little free time to meet esp given the distance . Ned was blissfuly enjoying the life a noble was expected to , he fitted the role of ruler and its responsibilities well and he had a loving wife and great kids whereas bobby b was getting into a drunken stupor , hunting, partying + spending a fortune of his own and the crowns money ...all to distract from the nightmare of his toxic marriage, all the responsibilities of being a king + husband and father he didnt want , his horrible numerous in laws , the possible coup from those targs and his vassals esp the reach , his annoying brothers, the self inflicted deterioration of his once fantasticly strong body , and the fact he wasnt allowed.to see his natural children and hes probably noticed of ....his legitimate children the oldest needs a good slap or talking to he cant give!! Hippocras
Their friendship was broken when Robert did nothing the punish the murder of innocent children. Jon was an extra layer to that, certainly, because Ned knew Robert would never let Jon live if he knew. But Ned was already angry about Rhaenys and Aegon before he went South, and he did not know yet about Jon. trollrrmartin
When Ned went South he had pretty much broken up with Robert over the deaths of Elia and her children. After Lyanna's death they reconciled, but up until the books they have only come together one time, for the Greyjoy Rebellion. The most telling scene about Jon's impact on their relationship is when Robert talks to Ned about Jon's "mother," meaning Ned felt forced at some point to give Robert a lie.
