brhodes
How about "Soldier of Fortune" by Blackmore's Night (originally a Deep Purple song) for The Hound's Theme.
jondegi
I actually like the idea of not having any other soundtrack or music except from the one which is actually played "live" in the books/series. Lot's of jesters and fiddlers and bards, but no themes specific to characters or places. For battlescenes, I think the grittyness will be better conveyed through dulled sword clashes and screams rather than through "moodenhancing" music, the same with speeches. (OT - Opeth is beautiful and fantasmogoric)
I love this idea! What better way to show that Westeros is unlike other fantasy worlds? EDIT: I would just like to add that they had better make real live versions of The Bear and the Maiden Fair, Rains of Castamere and other epic songs from the book, or I will be sorely disappointed. Archdaimon
didn't read all pages through. Just wanted to add that I wish for a style of music similar to six feet under... Subtle but very interesting. I too even though studying at a music academy of classical music would find it inappropriate with Howard Shore kind of music. All the wishes for "real" medieval music is from my view point unrealistic as to what hollywood has made "medieval" style has nothing to do with European medieval written music... Just listen to the music written by Richard Lion Heart... he composed several pieces typical of that era... nothing of the sort that people think of when hearing musical scores for movies, and, I do not want that style in a television show... I hope for subtle elegant music... I really like the composer for Six feet under and hope for that style of music.....

Jacopo Belbo
there is only one band that would do this TV series justice, has the breadth of styles to suit the varied cultural/thematic elements in the novels and the chops to pull it off successfully: DEAD CAN DANCE!!! silentsister
Yes, yes! As much medieval/folk as possible, with underlying symphonic score here and there!
I agree and there is so much great period music, not so much for the background but for individual scenes or characters. I think I posted this before (but now I can't find it)--my number one choice of songs for Cersei is April is in My Mistress' Face. It was written about 1570 or so and the lyrics are Cersei to a T: April is my mistress' face And July in her eyes hath place Within in her bosom is September But in her heart a cold December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd0oZXi-Ygs Here is another one that I think would work Now is the Month of Maying http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFDwLYL-hp8\\ I always think of the Riverlands for this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lya0S67nxt0 I found this while looking for these songs and I think it work as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBhrA0_NyJo What about bagpipes? Kyina
Has anyone already mentioned Haggard? They make really beautiful medieval music (just listen to Herr Mannelig *__*)!Another proposition is Faun:FAUN combines ancient instruments with modern influences to create an enchanting and powerful atmosphere.Influences of Celtic folk, medieval music and Arabic rhythmic tones fusing with driving beats draws an ever fast growing crowd of followers.I can imagine that they could do wonderful interpretations of the songs in the books like "the rain of castamere" or others.Even if their name needs getting used to the Mediaeval Babes could also make fitting music.Or maybe Estampie? As to Omnia or Dead Can Dance, I believe they would be great choices, too! :)

Morrigan
Has anyone already mentioned Haggard? They make really beautiful medieval music (just listen to Herr Mannelig *__*)!Haggard is an Austrian metal band - not gonna happen. :P I like them, but it wouldn't work. Also, Herr Mannelig is a cover, sort of: it's actually a traditional Swedish song. I've heard versions by Garmarna and In Extremo, too.As to Omnia or Dead Can Dance, I believe they would be great choices, too! :)Omnia kicks serious ass. Right now I'm listening to "Vas", an Indian/Iranian singer who resembles Lisa Gerrard quite a bit. It's good stuff. Ironically, I checked her out by a banner here, linking to her album on Amazon.com... the title and cover art intrigued me so I looked, saw similarities to Loreena McKennitt and Lisa Gerrard in the descriptions, and checked the samples. I usually never click on ads, go figure.
