Plot holes

I've been a reader of this forum for some years, without ever signing up. Well, now I have, as waiting for WoW is excruciating and I want to chat to fellow fans.

Anyway, one thing that has struck me on here over the years is how discrepancies in the plot and characters are analysed as GRRM having a grand plan further down the line.

Does anyone think that GRRM has actually just made a mistake?

An example, plucked out of thin air, is Varys not calling LF when he claims to Cat that the dagger belongs to Tyrion. Or why would Tyrion not have Littlefinger arrested and question him about the dagger, when he was happy to arrest Pycelle for reporting to Cersei?

Many think there is a motive for these things, but could GRRM not simply have made a mistake? With a tome as complex as ASOIF surely even the great man himself could be forgiven for a few fouls?

Apologies if there is already a thread on this that I've missed. It's just always interested me.
