The Battle of Winterfell (Theory)?

Littlefinger has an army now? Last I checked the only significant Vale lord that supported him was Lyn Corbray and that was under a guise. They Vale lords do not support him and will not mount any force behind him to march anywhere, least of all Winterfell.

Exactly. They wouldn't trust him with a young child that was likely to die any day anyways, why would they trust him with their armies?

But he wouldn't break his vows to do it, especially not now, when he's the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and actually has a purpose up there now, to fight the Others. Sure, he might be legitimized, but he's still abandoned all inheritance by signing up. To abandon it would mean he'd have to be put to death.

There's a back door to this. Your duty is finished when you die, and Jon was close to dead when we last saw him. He's "reborn amidst smoke and salt" in the storage area under the Wall where they preserve hams; Mel glamours one of the corpses from the ice cells to look like Jon and that's cremated. Poof, no more Lord Commander Jon Snow. In his place, Azor Ahai Reborn.
