Samwell Gnarly
In Eddard's 2nd chapter, Ned and Robert are discussing the future Warden of the East and Robert reveals that he was thinking of giving the title to Jaime Lannister. The Kingsguard aren't allowed to own land or beat cheeks so how come Jaime was being considered as a candidate for Warden of the East when he's already a member of the Kingsguard? The Mountain That Flies
Warden of anything is technically a military title. While it was always held by the Arryns (which makes Robert giving it to Jaime especially absurd), since the title was invented by the King on the Iron Throne, he can award it to whoever he pleases. It would presumably keep Jaime from doing all of his normal Kingsguard duties, but the titles are only activated when there's a war on, so it would be no different than a member of the Kingsguard taking charge of an army. Glom
By the way, who was appointed Warden of the East?
Sordelor
In the appendix stands that Jaime Lannister is Warden of the East.

In time Ser Jaime will succeed that honor. No man should hold both East and West." How would Jaime be able to succeed his father when he isn't allowed to inherit anything? Sordelor
He can't, but his father wants him to come out of the kingsguard to succeed him. And (spoiler of the beginning of affc) when Tyrion killed Tywin, Cersei became lady of Casterly Rock
Lady Nastja
In the appendix stands that Jaime Lannister is Warden of the East.Really? Does this still stand in aDwD? Odd that he never really reflects on it, nor does anyone for that matter.
Sordelor
No, it doesn't stand in the appendix of adwd, only in the ones of acok and asos.
rolltideviper
He would be Warden Regent, until Robert Arryn is of age. So technically he's not holding any lands at all. Plus, Robert B. is the King. He does what he wants.
steely94
The appendixes stateAGOT: only Jon Arryn is named Warden.ACOK: both Jaime and Robert Arryn are named.ASOS: both again.AFFC: only Robert A, and he's technically 'styled by his mother True Warden of the East'.ADWD: nobody. Not Jaime, not Robert A, not Littlefinger. Strange.
Sordelor
That's probobly because Petyr Baelish was protector of the vale and he wanted to help Sansa to become queen in the North and didn't want to help king Tommen anymore.

Warden is a military title so Jaime could have/did(?) taken it.
