Why did the eggs stop hatching?

Recommended Posts

We know from The Princess and the Queen and The Rogue Prince that dragon eggs were placed in the cradle of Targaryen babies and they would just hatch...No blood magic needed,no big fire!

The last dragon eggs that hatched were Aegon's III,Jaehaerys' and Jaehaera's(assuming that their dragon's were hatched in the cradle and not claimed after they grew up a little bit)

Viserys Targaryen's dragon egg didn't hatch, neither did little Maelor's(Aegon's II son)

So what happened? Many people suspect the maesters for the extinction of the dragons, but what did they do?Did they poison the dragons so their eggs wouldn't hatch?

Or did the Doom of Varylia had something to do with it?Did Valyria stop "feeding" dragons with magic 250+ years after the Doom?

Do you guys have any ideas??

I think that up to that point, an adult dragon was necessary to hatch the eggs. The eggs hatched because they had another dragon there to tend them, maybe heat them, whatever. So when the last actual dragon died, the means of hatching the eggs died with her. Doing so again required a sort of perfect storm blood sacrifice that, for whatever reason, no one else was able to replicate before and, we're led to believe in SSMs and Q&As, probably won't be replicated after.

I think after the Doom, magic began to trickle out of the world. Magic, as a whole, is cyclical and the Doom was the cataclysm at the end of that particular cycle of magic. The dragon eggs hatch for Dany because magic is coming back into the world (hence the Others haven risen at the start of aGoT). She had all the necessary ingredients but it was also just "the right time" in Planetos. Magic needs balance: White Walkers up and about? Time for some fire breathing dragons.

That's interesting...

So if Dany's dragons layed any eggs would they hatch??

Also,Viserys' and Maelor's egg were brought to them before the Dance so the were many adult dragons around so we would expect them to hatch

Some eggs just don't hatch. Just like not every egg a chicken or an eagle or a turtle or whatever lays will hatch.

If Dany's laid any eggs, sure, it's possible they might hatch. What we're not going to see again, almost certainly, is a hatching the way it was shown in the first book.

Oh dragon seer, do they hatch for anyone or do they need a targ? Is dragon blood not the key and its just some magical cycle? How long is this cycle you speak of? Is it related to planetary movements?

Imho its all related to the early embryonic cycle of dragons and their need for evidence as a catalyst for birth. I might just be making that up but its how i imagine it

It's the magic at least in large part.

The maesters probably were messing with the hatched dragons but I wonder if they even have the capability to do so in a way that would make successive generations weaker? It could be that the hatchlings were getting smaller and sicklier because of the waning of magic in the world.

Need for evidence? What does that even mean?

I'd say there are two magic cycles. The ice one apparently runs about 8,000 years.
