Bolton Civil War

The relationship between Roose and Ramsay is one of the most fascinating of the series. They are so different, and yet so alike. Plus, the actors that play them do an excellent job at bringing them to life. I've wondered, though, if there might be a rift between them caused by events surrounding the Battle of Winterfell. Here are some reasons:

  • Ramsay wants to revert to tradition and flay his enemies; Roose, not so much.
  • Roose, as cold and calculating as he is, and as much as everyone hated him for the Red Wedding, is an understandable character. His grim look when he saw what Ramsay did to Theon was heartbreaking.
  • We're waiting for the line where Roose says something like, "Don't make me rue the day I raped your mother." Ramsay obviously feels pained at this. He respects his father, obviously. But he knows he was born of rape and almost killed. That has to hurt, even for someone like Ramsay.
  • Roose is "boring," in the sense that Ramsay might enjoy the restrictions lifted on him.

It has to have run through Ramsay's mind, that with a quick slip of the knife, he could become the Warden of the North and run rampant around the North as he pleases.

Do you think that Ramsay will kill his father? Would kill his father? Before/after the rape comment? Before/after/during the Battle of Winterfell? Many believe that Ramsay will be responsible for Fat Walda's death - could this be the nail in the coffin for the Bolton Civil War? Who would most Boltons follow - the cold, responsible Roose? Or the anarchic, powerful Ramsay?

I'd like to think that Roose Bolton is more cunning than Ramsay thinks, and that even if he tried, Ramsay would be hard pressed to kill Roose without anyone noticing. If he does try anything, it certainly won't be before Stannis marches on Winterfell. I think Ramsay knows that Roose is a capable leader, and that without him, Stannis will ultimately succeed at Winterfell. The most likely course of action for Ramsay if he does attempt to kill his father is to try it in the midst of battle.

True. I imagine that, with Ramsay, they would be sitting down at dinner before Ramsay lunges and does the deed in three seconds.

That makes me wonder how capable a battle commander Ramsay is, and what his men think of him. He is ruthless, yes, and he was clearly able to keep the Greyjoys away from Theon last season (but was it really that hard?). I agree that it can only happen after Winterfell, though, if the Boltons come out strong enough for a Bolton Civil War to even be likely.

I think Ramsey will make a move against Roose because he's worried about Fat Walda being pregnant and him losing his inheritance. I also think Sansa bringing it up and then calling Ramsey a bastard is a way for her to provoke the situation.

Agreed. I kept thinking Sansa would pull a LSH and kill them herself, but I think shes learned from LF to use words and be patient. If she pokes at Ramsay enough about his inheritence being in question, even with being married to her, then hes sick enough to insure his place by killing Walda, which would piss off Roose enough to kill Ramsay himself

True. I'm hoping for a massive fustercluck in the aftermath/duration of the Battle of Winterfell. I think it's likely that, if the Pink Letter is trickery, that Stannis has brought about the demise of House Bolton, or the Boltons will destroy themselves from the inside - namely Ramsay.
