When Dany reigns?

Recommended Posts

What should the people of Westeros expect when Danerys finally crosses over the sea and rules on her iron throne?

Will they see her as a Gandi/Princess Di figure that the people of Astapor and Mereen saw her as?

Im sure Illyrio wasn't totally lying when he said there were families with hidden dragon banners who want a Targaryen back.

Well, Dorne will want her to wed Quentyn, Tyrells will want her to wed Margery, the Lannisters will want her to go away and give them back the Iron Throne, Stannis will want to kill her, the Starks won't care about her, but might ask to borrow a dragon to deal with the Others, the Vale will be too caught up in schemeing to get rid of LittleFinger to notice she's there, (f)Aegon will want to marry her, Euron will want to marry her, the riverlands will love any king or queen who helps them rebuild.

I think people will want to use her for thier own ends. Her greatest weakness is that she knows nothing of Westeros, and it will be interesting to see if she can keep the throne

They'll can expect dealing with the aftermath of yet another war right as a harsh winter is starting and the stores are already depleted.

And, either she's ruling over half of Essos and just adding Westeros to her realms, or she's left half of Essos in chaos (there goes trading for food to survive the winter...); neither one of those looks very good.

A bunch of carriers of the Pale Mare are probably coming with her, which Westerosi probably have a lot less resistance to than Essosi.

She hasn't made a deal with the Iron Bank about paying back the usurpers' debts, so she'll have that to deal with too.

In other words, interesting times.

The thread should be called "IF Dany reigns ..."

But if=yes, then she will have a hard time ruling

- oppoosing houses

- agreed, she slaves happy by giving them freedom but there is no such thing in Westeros. She will have a harder time making the small folk happy. So who will be her base of support then

- houses hate each other and plot against each other. how is she going to "break the wheel" exactly?

I think she will face many possible problems, which makes it very plausible for her being on the Throne in the end (see GRRM's statement about "Aragorn's tax policy and therelike), he seems to like such an ending.

It depends on how she gets into power.

The initial Targaryen conquest was via acquiring a monopoly of violence to the point that no one dared resist them. This enabled them to restructure society around the monarchy in many ways. Over time, even when the monopoly of violence faded (with the death of dragons etc.), the inertia of history and tradition still kept them on top and brought legitimacy that newcomers rarely have.

Robert's rebellion rejected the inertia of history and tradition by snatching it via a new monopoly of violence. However, the new order did not manage to survive long enough to gain much legitimacy via tradition etc. Currently the ball is in the air as no one has the Targaryen level of weight of history behind them, and no one is able to securely gain a monopoly of violence for long either. Dany can rely on some legitimacy via tradition, but Robert's rebellion has weakened the appeal of that claim (in comparison to the era before it when it was unchallenged). Hence much depends upon how effectively she will manage to acquire a monopoly of violence. The more she does, the more autocratic she can be.
