I don't know whether they would be able to install a program to, say, steal your internet banking details but I think you'd have to be pretty nuts to risk it, especially when a reputable VPN will cost you less than $10 a month. The way I see it, VPNs cost money to implement - so if you're not the one paying, someone else is, and chances are your data is the product changing hands.
