At least in my discipline, it's absolutely entirely arbitrary when and how much editors care about it.  Usually, they don't.  I use it when I think it's clarifying.  If it's unneeded intuitively, I'll leave it out.  Figure that's the most efficient employment, and I don't think I've ever gotten a complaint from a journal.  One advisor with a stick up his ass, yes.
