Do you feel ASOIAF would have been better as an animated series?

Yep. Animation has no limits and can do it all on a shoe string budget. It can be just as GRRM imagined it.

I can't really imagine GRRM imagining his series with crap voice acting and over the top gore in all the fight scenes. GRRM has made a fantasy series that is very real and any time you get into animation you lose a bit of that realness.

Ive seen plenty of anime. Anime of all sorts. Good anime, bad anime, anime by various different studios. Good dubs, bad dubs, you name it, ive seen it. I just still dont feel like anime would be right for this series at all. Even high quality shit like Studio Ghibli. (which i have nothing but extreme love for.) So yeah.

Sorry, I misjudged.

Personally, when I read some descriptions in the books (Targs, Daario...etc), I can't keep from thinking that GRRM's characters are so... anime.

Here is what, just about, every character would likely look like animated...

Errkk... :ack: :puke:

Exactly what I was saying about the ridiculous cartoonish style..

Those things work well for parody, but other than that...

Animation has its benefits as much as live action. You do not have to worry about hair and make up, costumes, character age, and everything. But having a live action cast gives it a sense of reality like it could possibly happen. I think if my favorite book to movies like Harry Potter, and LOTR were only animated they might be entertaining, but not have the same affect the producers and directors were hoping to achieve.

This is not to say that it can't be done, but they would really have to be nit picky on how they draw the characters and such. Which means not to give Dany big round boobs when she's only 14. No.

Nope, I'm yet to see a good animated adaptation of a non-humorous story outside Japan (agh, I love Spirited Away!!), although I do love the old and new Tintins (but they're a very different beast). The problem I find with animation of fantasy literature is that you already have to suspend belief with the storyline, and this is a lot easier to do when the imagery is real. I think animation is very good when used in abstract tales or in surrealism.

GRRM in his writing has emphasised the reality of this world (despite the fantastical elements like dragons, shadow-babies, the Others, greenseeing etc) through providing a gritty and vivid representation of a quasi-medieval world. There's blood, guts, rape, filth, bastards, power imbalances, lack of character shields (or at least unexpected deaths of major characters in relatively early stages of the story) and nasty endings abound. This serves to heighten the terror/wonder created by the fantastical elements, because most of the characters don't believe they exist either. That method works well in the horror genre, and it works well in GRRM's world. But if the visuals were animated, would you buy into the grittiness and realism of the world? Animation generally doesn't do 'grit' well, because it makes the visuals indistinct (blood also looks even more fake in animation than it does in live-action).

On a related note, I've always thought Harry Potter would have made better television than film, as it is quite episodic (much like Dickens).

Yes Yes Yes!!!

I read somewhere that one of the reasons GRRM was frustrated in his television career (pre-ASOIAF) because producers kept telling him his scripts were too big, complex, and likely to go over-budget. But one of the reasons animation became so popular in Japan was that they recognized you could tell an epic story taking place over a great amount of space without having to worry where to film it!

Done like Princess Mononoke, Flight of Dragons http://youtu.be/gzvMN1wQks4, Avatar, and a gritty/mature anime I can't give you an example of because I like fluffy stuff--sure, I'd watch it! But I don't think GRRM likes anime, so i doubt if it would ever happen.

Until the day that changes, we can always watch this:

edit: yeah i am apparently not good at linking stuff, sorry.

What do you mean by western style anime ?

Some Japanese anime (Berserk ?) depict medieval European world perfectly.

I just don't think a "cartoon" would be taken seriously and it would miss all the adult stuff of ASoIaF (we'll let aside the comedies as South Park...). Whereas Japanese aren't bothered by this stuff. Just look at how much "fanservice" they put in some anime... Even HBO doesn't beat some boobs oriented animes. And the gore stuff wouldn't be a problem either.

When I read this thread, I have the feeling that people who don't like the idea haven't seen anime at all (or only the classic shonen/nekketsu ones like Naruto, One Piece...etc). They talk about cartoons. And I agree that the idea of an ASoIaF cartoon is ridiculous.

But anime != cartoon.

I said a western style not anime.

I care nothing for fan service, and I don't give a damn if some people don't take a story seriously because its done in a different media, thats the problem with the west, we need more adult content for "cartoons" and no I don't mean some childish antics on family guy or anything like that, I mean actual looking people in animation.

Nothing against the anime style but I would like the characters to be done by a western feel and by someone who has thouroughly read the series and enjoys it.

Well, everyone agrees on that.

I know. That's why I tried to explain that in my opinion a cartoon would be a bad idea.

I don't care about fanservice either. I just don't want lobbies in the US to drop all the show's sponsors because it depicts "child pornography" (remember Skins US...) or other stuff not suited for family. With an anime, there would be no such problem.

No matter how well done, an animated GoT wouldn't bring fantasy to the level of realism that actors with dingy costumes and stubble and human eyes have. You can't sell dragons to a grown, cynical audience without Charles Dance or Sean Bean or the rest of them.

And that is the problem.

A high-budget version with grade A voice acting / sfx done in a similar style to Samurai X, but with more facial detail and obviously more modern animation technology I think would transfer fairly well. Serious and epic.

I think many forumers here (I am but a novice) can point out to you several animes at least as serious as ASoIaF can be.

You're probably right, i don't watch any so i couldn't really say.

I was talking about my opinion, i'm sure alot of people would love the anime version of it. I just couldn't take all the killing/sex/rape talk, seriously from an anime.

Anime would be awesome, but I don't think it would have that big of a fandom as it has now, since I know many people and I say I watch Anime sometimes and they usually like 'oh that is for kids'. Even though there is adult anime/cartoons, yes I believe they would be better so they could fit more of the other characters in, have all the things that would be too expensive to make for the show and it could be longer making it so we could fit in more stuff. But it would most likely only have fans of the book, people of already watch cartoons and maybe the few that stumbled upon it and like the story, live action gives that edge for a bigger audience.
