Daenerys In Martin's Other Works? [Spoilers]

There are certain themes, archetypes, and names GRRM likes revisiting. For instance, I think Laren Dorr from Lonely Songs is similar to Rhaegar. There is another thread around here that likens Bretan Braithe from Dying of the Light to Sandor Clegane. (It was by the poster Hound Dog. I can't do any linking right now.)

Are there possible inspirations and archetypes for Daenerys that Martin has used before or after?

As of now I can only think of two, or possibly just one.

1. Gwen Delvano from Dying of the Light.

Where they're similar: Like Dany, Gwen marries into what we would call a savage culture and at first has a hard time adjusting to the lifestyle, yet when she does she seems to adapt to it quite well. By the end it's clear she's transformed from the Jenny that Dirk knew to the Gwen that Jean Vikary knows. A more fierce person than before.

Where they're different: The obvious difference, Gwen is from a sci-fi story and Dany a medieval fantasy. Unlike Dany, Gwen had the choice of marrying into the Ironjade clan. But it was still a struggle for Gwen who had to be shared by Bretan who she hates (at least, this was my interpretation of that passage.) I don't think Dany was ever shared by Drogo's riders.

2. Adara from The Ice Dragon.

Where they're similar: They both have silver hair, ride dragons, and are seemingly connected to a fight between the elements. They both fly away on their dragons during a turbulent time.

Where they're different: The obvious, Adara is a winter child, whereas Dany is more connected to fire. When they fly away, Dany is brought to the Dothraki sea whereas Adara wanted to go to "the Land of Always Winter." Adara returns and helps save her family from three fire breathing dragons... Foreshadowing? Dany has yet to return but the next book should help see if their return is a difference or similarity. Adara was raised with a steady family whereas Dany had a turbulent life with Viserys on the run.

I think by searching through GRRM's history we might be able to come up with some more theories or guesses about what Dany's true role in the story. I haven't finished with Dreamsongs or many of his other writings, Tuf, Wildcards, Fevre Dream, but don't let that stop you from posting any thoughts.

Yes. Martin writes about people. Realistic people with flaws. crazy, right?

Indeed, the nerve of the man :P

I haven't actually read any of Martin's non-Westeros related works, so I can't really comment much on that, but the topic seems interesting so now it'll stay in my feed :P

Well Song has a lot of themes similar to his other works after all this is his Opus and it represents his work. Tell me is there a true blue hero the story is all about who saves the day and live happily ever after? You don't need to answer that question.

I shall anyway. No. He rarely writes about heroes. In fact, his first sold story was called "The Hero" and it was about killing a guy who wanted to adored as a Hero. I am looking for other characters who resemble Dany whether hero, villain, anti-hero, anti-villain, anything.

As of now, it seems Daenerys is one of his most unique creations when taking everything into account about her

I wasn't actually talking about Dany with the question, True blue was a clue. But yes she is one of his more original creations but he has been expanding for years and the characters in thrones are his most developed by a mile. Granted he has been developing them for some time. Dany has a lot of comparisons to Martins own family and to Martin himself. Which he has made, there is a little bit of payback in Dany. I think if you look you will find a little bit of Dany here and there and don't forget the male characters. Just because she is girl does not mean one his male characters didn't have some inspiration in her creation.

Though they are all original to extent and all the same as they come from one source.
