Val and Daario

In looking at the parallels between Jon and Dany, I've decided to take a closer look at Val and Daario. I know that they've been discussed and compared on other websites, but I haven't read much on this website (please direct me to a thread if I'm mistaken). There are a few things to note:

  1. Jon meets Val in a parley with Mance Raider. Dany first meets Daario at the parley with her army and the Stormcrows.
  2. Both Val and Daario fulfill "ambassador" roles -- Daario with the Lhazareen and Val with Tormund.
  3. There is an element of horror associated with both Daario and Val. To Jon's discomfort, Val comments on Shireen's grayscale, and to Dany's horror, Daario makes some....unhelpful (let's just leave it at that) comments on achieving peace in Meereen.

So Daario and Val have run along similar courses thus far, with the exception being that Jon's relationship with Val is still hypothetical and at best uses a future tense since there's only been flirtation between the two of them. This leads me to the following questions:

  1. What are some other similarities between Val and Daario?
  2. What is the bigger purpose of these characters to the main story line/the twin plots of Jon and Dany?
  3. What will be the fate of Daario now that Dany has flown off with Drogo? Will the Yunkai'i simply keep him in suspended story animation until the dragons are dead? And what is the fate of Val in the aftermath of Jon's stabbing? Will the fates of Daario and Val mirror each other?

@Turkish Delight I don't think the two share that many similarities.

At this moment in the story, one is held captive by the enemy and quite possibly feeling betrayed and will become the betrayer, while the other one is set in place as a very potential healer and love interest.

I'll let you guess which is which ;)

I have a hunch that this thread's only reason is to say "yada yada yada Val cannot be with Jon because Daario cannot be with Dany yada yada yada yada"

No. Daario is Shiera Seabisxuit.

why can't they be both. Dario is everyone else warged by bloodraven after all

Ok, but he's definitely not Euron because Jaquen is Euron.

And dario, in addition to banjen, tyrion, tywin, bob, the dusky woman and irri just off the top of my head

You are all wrong. Val is Benjen, who is Euron, who is the Hooded Man, who is Daarion, who is Coldhands, who is Ashara, who is Jon's twin, who is Varys, who is Jaqen, who is the Dusky woman, who is Ashara's baby daddy, who is Howland who has been warged by BloodRaven.

It is known.

As long as you put the in dusky woman and Tywin in there twice, I'll concede this point

I have a hunch that this comment's only reason is to say, "yada yada yada Val HAS to be with Jon because I want them together yada yada yada any exploration of Val's character that doesn't inevitably lead to this conclusion is obviously wrong yada yada yada."

Yet unlike your so called *theory* Val being Jon's queen has way too many text clues and foreshadowings.

Really good point. I think that, while they've traveled a similar path, there has to be a divergence between the two of them at some point. This may be it. Daario is not going to be the same after all is said and done. I've always had a hunch that he is one of Dany's three betrayals. Meanwhile, Jon has not received a prophecy that can be interpreted by some readers as having three lovers.

That being said, I don't think the parallels between them are unintentional. Nor does that mean that they can't have radically different outcomes for the two main characters they orbit. Val fascinates me. I always wonder what her purpose is for Jon. It may be that she has a hand in helping him "come back," literally or socially.

Same thing. One has foreshadowings the other has nothing.

No, not the same thing. One is a question about the relationship between two characters in a book series that loves to create parallels (or foils) between Jon and Dany. The other is an angry reaction comment because the idea that Val may not be more than a love interest (or she may be more than a love interest - the point is I'm asking this) and that Val and Jon may not live happily ever after with a pet unicorn is obviously unfair because "it's been foreshadowed."

Exactly, it seems that this is an attempt to demolish Val in order to make Dany and Jon happen when there is almost nothing to point that and while trying to do that you ignore all the differences between Daario and Val because they don't fit on your assumption.
