Rhaegar Targaryen

Rhaegar the Unbeliever

What about Alexander Skarsgard? He's already an HBO regular and Rhaegar might be an option since a second season of True Blood likely counts him out as a series regular.

I mean c'mon...he was Sexiest Man in Sweden 1999! :P

As far as we know, he only has one line that he might need to say, the "song of ice and fire" line. One line doesn't require much acting. Get some impossibly pretty model to pose in a few brief flashbacks and say his one line with as much gravitas as he can muster, and then get a stuntman for the fighting flashbacks, if any.

My suggestion is Michael Weatherly

I'd suggest Jared Leto.

And he has a younger and less good looking brother to play Viserys! Kieran Culkin
I thought Rhaegar had to be *GOOD* looking....(hides)

As for Alexander Skarsgård....holy hell! Break me off a piece of that! He's my choice.

I thought of Macaulay Culkin as Jaime:

With Katie Sackhoff as his twin Cersei:
The first time I read AGOT, I pictured Joffrey as Macauley Culkin (when he was younger). He would be the right age to play Jamie now, come to think.
except he is extremely short. He was what? 13 when he filmed the first home alone? Passing as a 6 year old when you're 13.... he's just an little elf of a human. Can you see a 5'1 or something skinny little blonde dude fighting with Brienne of Tarth?

When Ned comes in and finds him sitting on the throne he wouldn't be able to stand up, he'd have to hop down. heh.

IMO cameos of big actors aren't done because the role is small, they're done because the actor is a fan, or a friend, or something like that. HBO isn't going to spring for some big name to cameo just because they want a big name to cameo. With the large cast of characters there is a chance a big name will want to cameo. If the show is successful in season one and gets a lot of awards, there would be a chance a lot of big names may want to cameo in future seasons, but I think it is far more likely they cast a complete unknown as Rhaegar, complete unknowns are cheap.

I honestly hadn't been able to think of anyone who I'd cast as Rhaegar...until I was walking through Best Buy the other night and passed the DVD section, and the cover of the Prince Caspian DVD practically jumped out at me. Now, I never saw the movie, so I can't speak for his acting ability, but the actor who played Caspian, Ben Barnes, looks just about perfectly yummy enough for Rhaegar to suit me! (And seeing how little we'll likely see of him, he doesn't have to act well, he just has to look good!)

Imagine him with white-gold hair and dark blue-violet eyes. It works for me!

Actually I don't really agree: Barnes dark black eyes give him amazing presence - covering them up with blue contacts may defeat that.
I could see him as Loras though.

Luke Goss already has experience with wigs (and a "sister" to complete the look). He's British and also a musician, so it wouldn't be hard to slip him into the "emo minstrel" role.
Plus, he's fine as hell with white/blonde hair,
The role might be too small for his skill (he trained for 6-7 months with spears and swords for P.Nuada) - but it might also be small enough that he wouldn't be too expensive to get.

James Marsters. For Rhaegar or Jaime. C'mon, people! Hot! Has been convincingly playing a 20 something for over 20 years! Talented! BORN to play a spoiled and/or kickass prince! Would look FANTASTIC with long blond hair. And did I mention Talented? No? TALENTED!

There's got to be a role for him in this. Poor man is doing a Dragonball Z movie for Pete's sake! The humanity!

no WAY in HELL Spike is going to play Rhaegar. I would burn down the studio of they cast him.

As for the previous two suggestions, I like them both. Ben Barns is as close as I have seen to perfect for the role.

LOL! Fair enough!

I will personally torch the studio if Diane Kruger ends up in this thing. She's pretty--but has about as much acting range as a piece of plywood....In my thoroughly biased, Spike-loving opinion of course!

Well, I went ahead and gave Ben Barnes a Targaryen makeover. I still think he'd work real well.

Someone in another thread recommended Charlie Hunnam for Rhaegar a while ago, and ever since I saw the recommendation, that's how I've pictured him. Now I see Rhaegar even when I'm watching Charlie in Sons of Anarchy, where he looks scruffy and does a commendable California accent.

Maybe Jesse Spenser? I've only seen the guy in House as a background guy with an aussie accent, so I can't comment on his screen-stealing capabilities. He's not physically imposing enough for Jaime.

Charlie Hunnam looks better for Rhaegar.
