    Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

    The truth of events, or at least the perspective of the characters themselves in their pov will absolutely count for sh*t once tongues start wagging. Like it's repeatedly been pointed out in various tones and with a multitude of intents? Dany was screwed once she got them dragons. Everyone wants her gone. Even the Red Priests and their following would have the individual gone and trade it for their symbol and icon. And whatever she does from that point onwards is only going to be twisted in the telling, despite however good, bad, or stupid it might be. Damn her intentions or ambitions. By the time she sets foot on Westeros, she could be handing out lollies and preaching world peace (let alone in a conquest campaign armed with dragons and dothraki), she'll be seen as the absolute worst of all that westerosi can throw at her. Squandering potential allies before she even meets them out of stupidity, inexperience or plain out because she is a Targaryen with Dragons TM? Arianne Martell was always going to be bffs with the 'pretty new girl' who cost her a shot at the throne. Or Dorne. More than once. Right. Meanwhile, Tyrion 'Don't Look at Me I'm Just Here for the Game' Lannister will joyously cast his shadow spinning the runour mill.
  2. Tyrion's a villain. He has to be. The 'bad person best ruler' is at hand. So to spea. There is no 'single bad guy' everyone bands together to fight. There is no single Oz behind the curtain. This story isn't D&D's uplifting morale of 'rape empowers you and you must thank your abusers for the strong character you've become'. Insert vomit break here. Trauma ia trauma because it damages, warps even the kindest into deformed versions of who was before. There is no upside to abuse. Tyrion, who was a mostly harmless whoremonger (if there is such a thing) is headed straight to become a real piece of work. If indeed we get to see the greater good factually favoring the undeserving and objectively unkind, immoral and violent Lannister? If he even proves to be a competent administrator and counsel? The most Lannister of Tywin's progeny, the one he hated so. Well why the hell not?! We'll love to hate him, cheer as he underhandedly scrapes by, spreading chaos and misery in his wake. Instead of sanctifying a moron who got everything wrong and blabbed a bunch of facts and lies interspaced enough to have the generic ken doll kill dragon barbie. Ugh.
  3. So... the whole 'very disputed and close bidding war until Netflix did their thing' was BS? Lovely. Also, I guess that derrails the unholy trinity of prophecised destruction: HBO, Disney and Netflix? The Mouse House already sampled fan backlash due to Star Wars. And even the one movie they are reduced to sounds more like a contract obligation for Disney than a 'we absolutely wants these guys?'. Whoever said the 'now they're contained to Netflix, yay!', wins a cookie.

    And the thing about the world changing but staying the same is so terribly on point, isn't it? GRRM gives us an allegory inside a metaphor dressed up as fantasy, but the social critique is as valid now as it was when the stories had just started being written. Maybe more even.

    Exactly. The system works for the ruling class. So something has to give. Badly. If the level of destruction caused by the Winter to come could, say, be on par or above the devastation of the plague? That was a key moment to force RL feudalism to end. Peasants became important because they were so few and feudal lords depended on their work force to maintain their property and wealth. Some superduper MagicTM boywonder being made King would simply butcher the chance to finally end the Dark Ages Westeros has stagnated into.

    Thank you. And it would tie in, personally, to a very 'fantasy fan' view on the bittersweet ending soundbyte from GRRM. World saved, world diminished, but world saved. Bran as a 'reigning' figure, probably on the Isle of Faces?, hidden and eventually forgotten, I can take. It would plainly show the slightest bit of slowly fading magic, loosing importance until it's irrelevant. And yes, prophecy and magic have caused so much harm and death it nearly overshadows what has been brought about by pure human greed and stupidity.

    So no. Bran might become the leader of what little remains of magic in Westeros, much like the King of Greenwood remains a king, but in Middle Earth Elves no longer matter to the grander scheme of things as in Westeros magic must fade to end the enduring Medieval Age that has lasted since the last Long Night, but he will not be King of the Six Kingdoms or whatever that idiocy was. I truly believe Bran will be important in the conflict ahead, but a King? King of the However Many Kingdoms and elected to be so as much as a Targaryen in all but name? Nah.
  9. No wonder GRRM seems nostalgic? If indeed ASOIAF was written initially as a reaction to the endless 'corrections' to his writting to make it 'more viewer and industry friendly'? As a dare, to himself, to write something unfilmable? Deciding to allow someone (or someones) with the cash and clout to go at it with a will must've been the ultimate trial by fire. Tada! Prueva no superada. And point bloody made. I can only imagine the 'alterations' he directly had to argue down and back from that first, disastrous pilot to the late days of his direct involvement. From then on my best guess is there was only the Pilate route. The experiment was done and the lesson learned.

    Exactly. Hence the amount of onlyifs and eventhens in the whole post. The world would be upside down and sideways to the point where the only lesson would be, again, beware of following people or a person of proven power or even a ceeed or system on the basis of 'it's our only way out, all hail our savior' mob mentality. There's something sketchy about the CotF and the whole ThreeEyedRaven concept. That's way too much power set upon one entity. The other idiot was running around straddling a damn nuke, people bowing and scraping at her feet and she went coocoo ffs. As you say, so rightly? A twelve year old crippled boy, with all his dreams crushed in one traumatic event? Knowing everything or thereabouts? Not scary. Like, at all.

    If Winter happened as promised: a HELE with bold letters the likes of a Terminator style nuclear winter with add-on DayAfterTomorrow speed of onset? I would accept a 'council of surviving characters' situation, with the honestly few people left alive deferring to Creepy Magic Kid on the basis of last chance survival panic mode. This would also necessitate all the idiots fighting over the Iron Throne to have gone full scale Battle Royale, further depleting the available resources and indiscriminately slaughtering people left right and center to the point where an already endangered continent faced with a bad Winter will be basically defenceless against a legendary foe that seems pretty determined to end humanity. Then, and only then, with so few survivors that everyone knows everyone pretty damn directly, running from the utter destruction wrought by the Others, would I believe Bran could be chosen as a leader. And even that possibility would be more the actual Lord Protector role than the traditional kingship we were shown.
  12. People tend to fixate on the long winded descriptions of the lab equipment and the stern morals of Carlos' grandfather. The boy is an idiot, but what can you do about it. His bourgeois life had him bored and too infantilized to actually be more than a boy. Personally I did laugh at the bits where life in society Lisbon becomes something of a comedy of horrors, like Salcede's stupidity and the spanish mistress. Being forced to read and dissect it as fifteen year olds erases most, if any, enjoyment out of it for about everyone.
  13. You won't see me claim LotR was perfect. Far from it. I still occasionally break out the extended edition dvds and bonge he damn thing. Yes, in one sitting. Green goop ghosts and all, yes. Peter Jackson and co. did the unthinkable and made fantasy feasible, big budget wise and quality too. They put well over a generation back on 'reading the classics' and for once, well over the original fan base flocked to theatres, bajillions of copies were sold, new marathon traditions were established. What I'm going for with my last post is that, for GoT, initial fumbles or no, the potential for cult following and respect as a TV show was there. Somewhere along the way though, the sacrifice for more viewers and increased popularity was... the fantasy itself, the inner machinations of the characters. Sure there were dragons and a mythos built on magical threat, but it was an action show. Sure there was plot, but it was soap opera style intrigue worthy of local shows that win International Emmy awards. (!) Watched by the same crowds flocking to a title fight, championship game or the latest blockbuster. Once you get to that point you drink the cup to the end, knowing the bitter is in the last few drops. Mass entertainment has repeatedly shown to not give a bleeding fig about consistency or lasting quality. LotR had the amazing luck of being done in one sitting. Despite it all, the 'money' would've spoken louder if the time had been given for 'them' to interfere. See: The Hobbit. GoT ran for way too long to not be 'improved' by the industry itself. Despite the effort and quality of work of so many of those involved, I personally will always prefer to be a cynic even when looking back. GRRM's 97% comment rings especially true once you dive into the obscure realm of 'adaptation' in so many countries and litteratures and traditions. 'Os Maias' - arguably one of the densest romance novels on the 'must read if you want to pass English', or Portuguese as the case might be, must've been 'adapted' over a dozen times or more, not counting actual community theatre. The complex intergenerational conflict and social critique tends to stay at a couple anecdotes or is plainly ignored. The scandalous incest sex and mistaken identity fiasco remains really popular, though, and mostly turns an over five hundred page dry as dust novel most highschoolers hate with a fiery passion into an NC17 screwfest between Carlos and the woman he inicially doesn’t know is his sister. Sound familiar?
  14. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If GoT were to actually go down in history as the fiasco the not insignificant amount of people who cared about story content saw it as? Fantasy, as a high power, high dollar attractive for tv would be done. The industry works in cash for cash. The money you put in needs to be seriously multiplied. Once you consider the brutal monster the GoT budget became? Either it is considered the greatest thing ever on TV or things will become weird and stilted in the fantasy tv content world. Still, the work that was done is groundbreaking. Worthy of best ever podium? I don't think so. So if GRRM needs to support it and believes the pros outperform the cons? TV, even in this climate of viewers being spoiled for choice, is still a game of popularity. And the viewers worried about quality of content are very easily dwarfed by the multitude of casual viewers who tuned in to GoT to watch spectacle and shock value. So pile on the Emmys and the recognition for all parts of the show, not just the honestly amazing, all of it. Warts and all. Or D&D and all. It's survival time. Those casual viewers have ling since tuned out to watch something new. Without the Comic Con brouhaha, the record Emmy nominations and the repeated shoutouts to D&D's new ventures and contracts, who of those millions who shutdown sportsbars to watch a fantasy series cares about GoT anymore? The sad thing? We can't say for sure that without D&D's fireworks and tits 'technique', GoT would've appealed to the same general public that made it so enormous. It would've, might've, been a better, more faithful adaptation, but it most probably wouldn't have hit 'telenovela' following in a generalistic audience. Like as not, GRRM, old hat at the TV business, has made his peace with the facts.

  16. It's a 'confused' emoji situation. It's all I've got. With a truckload of allowances made, I'd maybe, repeat, maybe, consider their adaptation a decent one. At the beggining. With the author policing and guiding their work. And even then the people who lived and loved the original material had cause to go 'meh'. But this? I just don't see it. Then again, I don't have 200million to throw at some guys on the off chance they don't repeat the whatever that idiocy about the AU!Civil War thing was?

They managed to brutalize the GoT fountain of miracles to the point the prospective next phase a la Marvel is now an uncertain mirage at HBO, while they are coming out smelling like roses and called masters of whatever. The world of Hollywood is a many screwed up thing.
  19. I just read D&D signed a supposedly nine figures contract with Netflix after a very close bidding war? So, which is it? We all know GoT got big, bigger and eventually ginormous. All the while as the story telling itself lost depth, complexity and eventually all sense, the spectacle grew to unseen proportions, building the legend. The portion of fans who protested were sandbagged under the claim of, what was it?, an industry naysaying campaign? The same industry that was oh so ready to (just like HBO when the 13 episode fracas was decided and they offered them litteral piles of gold to make the full ten episodes seasons) worship at the altar of their style of production? Again, which is it? In the end, HBO gets a 'live long and prosper' while D&D go Netflix? What about the Mouse House and their Star Wars dreams? Someone clear this up for me.

Regardless of her original intent or actual actions, if the final narrator is an opponent, Daenerys, and indeed any notion of the Targaryen dinasty, will be a horror story of tyrants and idiots unredeemable by the occasional Jaehaerys. GRRM repeatedly gives us the unreliable narrator, the perspective of an emotional recounting of events. The notion that, in any iteration of this universe, a defeated foe might be spoken well of is at the very least naive. I don't know how it well happen, but the Mother of Dragons will be remembered as the Mother of Monsters.
  21. Well, imo the Odissey makes for more manly storytelling. Insert sarcasm. No need for the complications of morally challenging choices in that part of the story. No need for daughter killing at all. And the wife was an adulterous moron, tada!. Not an agent of her own vengeance over a murdered daughter, as per the less flattering to the persona of the 'murdered king' version. Or you could just have a captured slave girl kill him during the sack of Troy. Ugh.
