  1. Few things, 1. Gil-galad was king of Hithlum before Gondolin even fell, he was King over the surviving Elves at the mouths of Sirion when Tuor and Idril fled there already. 2. Elves are martial in that period and Gil-galad is a noted warrior. Elrond is not. 3. Are Elros and Elrond described as being identical twins? Even if so it's pretty easy to see why Elros was made king and Elrond was not. Elros by appearance is a man made better by his elven blood to other men. Elrond by appearance is an elf made worse by his mannish blood to other elves.
  2. Actually in the text it specifically notes that Isildur wants to talk to Elrond because the Ring is becoming a problem for him. So.... what? Also. what is your last paragraph. You mean Isildur didn't want to share power when he promoted his nephew to a position higher than he himself held under Elendil? You think Isildur should have turned down the role he and every single other person in Arnor and Gondor knew he was getting for over 100 years and leave it empty? And man that Aragorn is an arrogant ass for wanting that same position 3000 years later not to mention that fool Arvedui right? Perfect victims for the Ring. Especially that Aragorn.
  3. Possibly. Being a numenorean he might have had the will to use it. For the fanciful scenario above, I think more likely than him falling to it and then conquering would have been told by Elrond again to destroy it.(Isildur was also going to Rivendell to ask Elrod about it)And then journeyed back to unguarded Mt doom and either chucked it or one of the good guys would have seen he was falling and chucked him in with it.
  4. I believe roads and resupply. If he wanted to go the the gap way he had to travel up the road to bree then east which is a lot longer as there is no where to resupply until Tharbad and between Tharbad and Rivendell sans road is a big swamp before he can get into the hollin stuff which is still rough trecking up to RV. Whereas East he can hard march straight by roads to Emyn Muil east side and then north across plains to Greenwood and resupply at Lorien then north and resupply from Thranduil and cross the high pass. The army was 400 men and all Numenoreans so hearty and able to move fast on flat terrain. Also there would be no reason to suspect Orc armies in the area given that he had come that way south already with Elendil/Gil Galad and Amroth/Thranduil already went north unmolested. The orcs only attacked him because of the Ring.
  5. Why is there a problem with the prospect of a museum?
  6. I'll second his high fantasy Fionavar Tapestry. It's true the starting premise is pretty silly and it is kind of uneven in that their are some definite lows but when he hits the highs, my God does he ever hit the fucking highs. I've read most of his other stuff and I can say pretty confidently that the high points in Fionavar pretty much eclipse everything else he's written, and quite frankly eclipse most of what I've read in the fantasy genre as a whole.
  7. I don't understand why people are mad/questioning the white walker art. Who cares if was in the books or not? It was established in the first five minutes of episode 1/season 1 that this is what the White Walkers do with bodies.
  8. Quite liked the episode. In particular the Greyjoy stuff was fantastic, I really like how they showing Theon's need for approval. One gripe for me was the scene with Brienne walking through camp with Cat. It was just poorly done from a technical standpoint. They were very, very, obviously doing a forced perspective camera shot as there was a different focus between the two of them. I'd guess that's due to the budget as it would cost more to hire stand-in's and then splicing the two together like how it was done in LOTR. Makes me wary of future Brienne scenes though. Actually bothered me quite a bit.
