US Politics: Nancy's Knock on the Senate Door

There is no “almost” about it. That’s what is being done.

It’s a violation of the 1st Amendment to require recitation, but, social approbation is a powerful motivator even if it is not legally required.

Martin confirms Dany's coin lands good.

No. There is a difference between casualties as a result of bombing. Robespierre removed the heads, a deliberate choice not an "opps I was aiming at someone else", of more than fifteen thousand people. That's a tyrant.

Are Pompeo or Trump using that phrase?

I'm sorry but that's nuts in my view. Once you start killing former allies for not being "radical enough" you've gone off the deep end. Robespierre was a tyrant drunk on the blood of his victims. Robspierre killed more than fifteen thousand people. No, that cannot reasonably be justified without completely devaluing human life.

On what basis could anyone claim that Robespierre (author of "la terreur") wasn't a tyrant? Napoleon was a dictator but I can see how some would claim he wasn't a tyrant.

How many people died in the "Great Leap Forward" and the "Cultural Revolution"? How much blood does a tyrant have to shed to be put into the "Bad guy" column?

There are people who are unaware the US outright stole the northern third of Mexico which happened to include some of the richest gold deposits ever discovered? See California Gold Rush.

    Stormlight 4 is finished

  14. I'm not so sure. If Oil forms from oceanic organisms over millions of years and we've had oceanic organisms for billions of years is it not possible (again not likely, but possible) that an earlier technological civilization lived off the fossil fuels of an earlier epoch and we are living off the production of a later epoch? https://www.reference.com/science/long-oil-form-naturally-f516e26897aef0e From the article:

Call me when Lynch, Martin, or Rothfuss finish their work. Sanderson just doesn't do anything for me. :P
  17. Explicit evidence. Structures, artifacts, the large detritus of civilization. That is what the author says wouldn't survive deep time. He does say that there would be indirect evidence of civilization, a spike in CO2 emissions. An unusually high presence of rare earth minerals in the strata for that period of time reflecting the use of such minerals in technology. He also points out that depending on the level of industrialization and the length of time it existed it could be nearly impossible to spot this conclusively because the shorter the time span and the cleaner the civilization decides to live the harder it will be to spot in deep time. The Venutian question is interesting. Given the difficulty of exploring Venus due to its extreme climate make it even more intriguing. What could survive there that we could find?
  18. The most likely method of discovering intelligent life is detecting their radio emissions. How do you propose to “kill” and intelligent species light years from Sol?
  19. If by some miracle we did find a non-human artifact on Luna we’d be left with a very interesting conundrum in determining its origin, wouldn’t we?

Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel

I ran into this post-Apocalyptic work in my local book store last month and just got to it. It focuses on the few people who survive a massive an virulent flu pandemic. It shifts between their lives immediately prior to the pandemic and events following after with great deftness. It is a dark book but one that examines why we do what we do with our lives and the emptiness we frequently find. The pandemic serves as a crucible through which all the characters (but one) are passed and the interesting question is what they find in themselves after their flaming trial. I’m not quite finished but I am profoundly enjoying this book.

Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel

I haven’t read that one. Is it set in our world or something else? One of the things I appreciated about Station Eleven was how familiar the broken civilization was. It wasn’t bizarre or strange, it was something I could imagine seeing. Is Winterlong that sort of post-apoplectic fiction, or something else?

I like the way it used the Actor’s death in the first chapter as the framework for the entire novel.

US Politics - All He Wants for Christmas Was His Two Dead Sheep

It is speech that makes an explicit threat. Shea, I think you will agree, is, at a minimum, unworthy of the office he holds and the Washington House of Representatives has every reason to expel him from that body. If he has gone beyond mere pamphleteering and actually engaged in illegal actions in support of his advocacy of Dominionism he should be investigated, charged with his crimes, and imprisoned if convicted.

US Politics - All He Wants for Christmas Was His Two Dead Sheep

He admits to spreading a pamphlet that calls for the execution of any men who will not submit to their version of theocratic rule. He is literally fomenting a Christian/American version of the Taliban except he's also explicitly advocating genocide against any males who disagree with him. How again is this a "nothing to see here" moment where we should be focused on Trump's persecution complex?
