  1. Finished Beef, and it's definitely one of my favorite shows of the year, right up there with the final seasons of (fellow dark tragicomedy-dramas) Succession and Barry. The story didn't go quite as I first expected it, in the best way. The soundtrack was perfect - you can see it was chosen by people who really used to listen to the 1990s alt rock, because it's not just the most obvious or famous songs or artists. I was reminded of some of the songs I used to love I hadn't heard in many years. That made the show very relatable... that, and the Sacramento Kings references Steven Yeun's character kept making (being a Kings fan, now that's early 2000s pain ). Gotta hand it to Steven Yeun, the three roles I've seen him in have all been completely different and he was great in all of them: good guy zombie killer in TWD, slick psycho rich guy in Burning, messy loser who can't do his construction work right in Beef.
  2. One addition - and since it's almost New Year, I'm now only putting shows that came out in 2023. great: Succession season 4 Beef - another brilliant dark (tragi)comedy-drama about messy people ruining their own lives and those of others. (All three of my top shows this year are) This story didn't go how I thought and kept surprising me, and got more emotional as it went on. Great acting and a perfect soundtrack consisting of 1990s alt rock songs that matched each situation. Barry season 4 Silo season 1 The Bear seasons 1-2 good: What We Do in the Shadows season 4-5 In Limbo season 1 Yellowjackets season 2 Schmigadoon season 2 decent/mixed bag: The Fall of the House of Usher The Last of Us season 1 Ted Lasso season 3
  3. Trying to finish a few more TV shows before the end of the year. Binged Silo - excellent SciFi mystery thriler/drama with a strong cast. Great seeing Rebecca Ferguson as the lead in a good show, Tim Robbins - who I haven't seen in a long time (where has he been?), Iain Glen as the protagonist's dad, and Harriet Walter is the MVP of appearing as an interesting, complicated mother figure (not actual mother here) in some of the best recent/current TV shows. The twist at the end opens up interesting possibilities for season 2 Finished season 2 of The Bear - which is excellent workplace/family drama about a bunch of dysfunctional but still likable people, which barely has any comedy elements, so I'm puzzled how it's being put in the comedy category. Currently halfway through Beef, which is amazing and will probably end up as one of my favorite shows of the year - another comedy-drama (which is a drama according to AACTA, while The Bear is a comedy.... although Beef has so many more comedic moments, and not just with comic relief minor characters like The Bear does.) My ideal outcome of these Emmys would be if Succession, Barry and Beef won their respective categories (drama, comedy and limited series) because those will probably end up being my favorite shows of the year (if Beef is as good throughout as it's been so far). Although that would also be hilarious since they're all more or less the same sub-genre of comedy-drama that could be called tragedy-dark comedy, but I love that sub-genre. This will probably not happen though - Succession and Beef are almost certainly winning, but Emmys never cared much for Barry, so the comedy category will probably be won either by The Bear (which I'd be OK with even though I'd prefer it wait for the next Emmys to win for season 2, and even though it's not even comedy-drama but just drama) or Ted Lasso (which would be ridiculous - while Ted Lasso was one of my favorite comedies of the last few years, its final season was very inconsistent and doesn't deserve all these nominations, let alone a win. It should have only gotten a few acting nominations and nothing else).
  4. I'm curious what the rules about the 'foreign language film' eligibility is - what percentage of the film has to be in a language other than English? Past Lives has, I'm not sure, probably more than 50% in Korean?
  5. Last year's lead actress category was also a disgrace, because they snubbed the two best performances of the year - Mia Goth in Pearl and Danielle Deadwyler in Till.
  6. You cannot be serious. Unless you're talking about quality, which is debatable, but if you're talking about the horrificness... it sure as hell never backs up and only gets a lot more horrific, no one can deny that.
  7. great: Succession season 4 Barry season 4 [Andor season 1 (2022)] Silo season 1 - excellent SciFI mystery drama with a great cast The Bear seasons 1-2 - excellent workplace/family drama about dysfunctional but likable people, which weirdly gets lumped into the comedy category at the awards though it has barely any comedic elements. I need time to get used to all the kitchen lingo though good: What We Do in the Shadows season 4-5 In Limbo season 1 [The Old Man season 1 (2022)] Yellowjackets season 2 Schmigadoon season 2 [Screw season 1 (2022)] decent but I wasn't crazy about it: The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) The Last of Us season 1 Ted Lasso season 3 [MoonKnight season 1 (2022] I'm halfway through Beef and it's great, will be added soon.
  8. The Satellite Awards seem determined to prove they're deeply unserious. Snubbing Kieran Culkin for Best Actor but nominating Brian Cox - who was in 2 and a half out of 10 episodes. Snubbing Matthew McFadyen and nominating James Cromwell - who was in a few scenes in 1 episode as a guest actor, which is what he was on Succession. There's a high chance the voters did not actually watch season 4. Although Satellite Awards generally seem to love category fraud, since Jeremy Strong won the 2019 Award for Best supporting actor for Succession LOL I get that he wasn't that famous then, but no other award ever tried to pretend he was a supporting actor in that show!
  9. Come on, these Indiana critics ignoring Cooper is so funny. Someone pointed it out on another website, that's how I even know about their nominations.
  10. Indiana critics really, really don't like Bradley Cooper. They nominated Maestro for Best Lead Performance - Carey Mulligan, Cinematography and Editing... but not for the best film, and nothing for Cooper. No direction, no script, and he's not among their 16 (!) nominees for Best Lead Performance. Indiana Film Journalists Association -2023 Award Nominees http://indianafilmjournalists.com
  11. Lyonel "Laughing Storm" Baratheon Next: Mark Ruffalo
  12. So I assume the Golden Globes, unlike the Oscars, aren't bound by the rule that they can only nominate non-English language films that their country has nominated? Since France has not nominated Anatomy of a Fall.
  13. Everyone pretending that The Bear is a comedy is always funny, but I see the Globes, like Emmys, are also pretending that Brian Cox was a lead actor in season 4 of Succession. LOL
  14. Well, he says it is - and that The Iron Throne is a temporary title (fortunately) till they come up with something better.
  15. Unexpected casting choice. I think Kieran Culkin, aside from being American, is kind of perfect for a book accurate Littefinger: Littlefinger is supposed to be a very small man, and, unlike the GoT Littlefinger with his Batman voice, he's a guy no one sees as a threat. Not because they think he's such a great guy, but because he's not just lowborn by their standards but also kind of this guy who's smart and resourceful but just around doing a job and making off-color jokes and being friendly and funny, and when he turns out to be a villainous mastermind, that's a huge surprise. Austin Butler as Gerris Drinkwater Next: Barry Keoghan
  16. Barry snubbed again. Can't say I'm even surprised. I don't understand the overwhelming praise The Last of Us is getting.
  17. I'm a bit confused about the "freedom of expression" award. and why KotFM got the overall award but isn't on the list for that one.
  18. Young: Harwin Strong, current age: Lyonel Strong Next: Kieran Culkin
  19. Lots of reunions of people who were together in different movies amd shows - or in one case, two young women both starring in new Disney versions of popular fairytales who got a lot of racist hate for being cast.
  20. The most absurd example was when both of the co-leads of Judas and the Black Messiah ended up being nominated as Supporting Actors.
  21. She should not have submitted for the Supporting Actress category because her role is not supporting. She is one of the leads. Actresses playing her sisters and mother would be supporting. I hate category fraud, and I hate the way it's treated like supporting category is treated like some sort of a consolation prize and the lead category as "the main prize". It should be about whether you are playing one of the leads or a supporting character. I also find it really annoying when people commonly call the Best Actor in A Leading Role / Best Actress in a Leading Role categories "Best Actor"/"Best Actress". No, there is no such category at the Oscars. You have to look at SAG awards or some others that don't have separate leading and supporting categories for that. The Best Leading Actor category is about leads, the Best Supporting Actor categories are about the supporting actors. It's not supposed to mean that the former are better than the latter. The former category is not all-emcompassing of all roles.
