Dead-ard Stark
Is it pronounced "Iron Wood" or "Ron Wood"?
Dead-ard Stark
Every time I read it, I see it as "Ron Wood" but think GRRM probably meant "Iron Wood".
House Lemongrab
I've been pronouncing it "Yorenwood" for some reason. "Ironwood" makes more sense though.
joluoto2
I think Y is supposed to pronounced like an I as in iron in this. In some langugaes I and Y are very close to each other in how they are pronounced. I think this is what GRRM is going for here.
shearstone
Well I feel daft reading this! I thought the y was actually a thorn (like ye = the) so I assumed the name was house Thronwood.
GallowsKnight
What about Yohn Royce?
Stan the Man Baratheon
What about Yohn Royce? Yawn Ro-ice.
GallowsKnight
Yawn Ro-ice.That's how I do it but I've heard others call him "John". Bronze John is also a Fevre Dream character as GRRM loves reusing names.
Bright Blue Eyes
What about Yohn Royce? John. But then, I'm german, and in german y is pronounced like i or j, depending on the surrounding syllables. And especially in older pieces of writing (pre-Duden), there are a lot more ys. It evokes an atmosphere of ancient names. Just like GRRM does all the time.

Duckfield
The Y is actually an I, so it's Ironwood, like in Blackfyre...I really hate that whole Y <-> I thing... btw I think it means the house might have some Valyrian roots, all the Valyrian words and names we know so far don't have the letter "I" in them, instead only "Y"s. Cry_Havoc
I pronounced it, Yarn-wood.
Ramsay's Third Nipple
Yonwood for me. Somehow it got a silent R.
PTWP
Since we are on pronunciations, is Rhaella(Aerys's Wife) Ray-la or Ray-ella? Is Rhaelle(Egg's daughter) Ray-elle or closer to rail?
Shadrich
Why-ron wood. That's how I was saying it.
Ramsay's Third Nipple
Rail-la. I hate how the show pronounces Gilly and Gendry. They pronounce it Gen-dry, as I'm more inclined to make the G sound more like a J, like pronouncing Gemma.
Blutraven
It's Ironwood. Rail-la. I hate how the show pronounces Gilly and Gendry. They pronounce it Gen-dry, as I'm more inclined to make the G sound more like a J, like pronouncing Gemma. How do you pronounce gill?
Ramsay's Third Nipple
The same way, like Gillian.
The Holy Goat
"Ironwood" and "John Royce" have always been my pronounciations. 'Yron' is 'Iron', just like 'Fyre' is 'Fire'. I've always viewed Yohn and Jon as being different version of John, perhaps with slightly different pronounciations.
eggs
Ironwood and Bronze John for me. Never knew people had such weird pronunciations for Yronwood though.
