The idea is that this was their payment, to be collected after the deed was done on the way out "Go kill the princeling and escape into the tunnels; your payment will be waiting for you in the Tower of the Hand through blah de blah" The fact they never seem to escape or are at least never heard from again lends credence to this as well.
