U.S. Politics- This Is Us, Basically Fascists

A very long, well-written, fascinating and sobering read on how the global community came together in the 1980s, after the very successful CFC ban, and stood ready to work together on climate change, but a small number of individuals in the United States threw their plans completely down the toilet for their own enrichment.

Annoyingly, this was nearly avoided because some of the people at Exxon saw the possibility of moving their business to the cheaper-to-develop renewable energy field, so did their own climate change research in the late 1970s and early 1980s and nearly swung behind it, but the short-termists won out and did everything in their power to stop action being taken.

Is that saying he's actually been found guilty of stealing that amount and never faced a single day in prison?

Not quite. The Forbes article explains it better. He's never been indicted. He's been sued and it seems that he acts a bit like a powerful person accused of sexual harassment. When he gets in real trouble with a lawsuit after he has ripped someone off, he gets them to take a settlement that requires them to remain quiet about it.

Interesting parallels to Trump, and not just all the lying, greed, and corruption. The pledging money to charities and then not paying it. The lying to inflate his position on lists of the most wealthy.

New Details About Wilbur Ross’ Business Point To Pattern Of Grifting

A multimillion-dollar lawsuit has been quietly making its way through the New York State court system over the last three years, pitting a private equity manager named David Storper against his former boss: Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. The pair worked side by side for more than a decade, eventually at the firm, WL Ross & Co.—where, Storper later alleged, Ross stole his interests in a private equity fund, transferred them to himself, then tried to cover it up with bogus paperwork. Two weeks ago, just before the start of a trial with $4 million on the line, Ross and Storper agreed to a confidential settlement, whose existence has never been reported and whose terms remain secret.

It is difficult to imagine the possibility that a man like Ross, who Forbes estimates is worth some $700 million, might steal a few million from one of his business partners. Unless you have heard enough stories about Ross. Two former WL Ross colleagues remember the commerce secretary taking handfuls of Sweet’N Low packets from a nearby restaurant, so he didn’t have to go out and buy some for himself. One says workers at his house in the Hamptons used to call the office, claiming Ross had not paid them for their work. Another two people said Ross once pledged $1 million to a charity, then never paid.

The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration over its decision to remove asylum protections for victims of domestic and gang violence.

The ACLU is arguing against “expedited removal” policies, put forth by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, that it says “generally” deny claims of violence of that nature.

“This is a naked attempt by the Trump administration to eviscerate our country’s asylum protections,” Jennifer Chang Newell, managing attorney with the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said in a statement. “It’s clear the administration’s goal is to deny and deport as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.”
