But apparently everyone down south seems to love her, and her reign seems quiet and peaceful, because we aren't told or shown otherwise.
 

True but I don't think the people really realized how mad Cersei could potentially turn out to be. They found that out much later.

You are right however that they did a poor job of showing us the peoples POV in Kings Landing.

I think that cersei would never have been able to hold the throne. She destroyed the sept and took out the tyrells but she had no support from anyone right after that happened. The king killed himself and EVERYBODY hates cersei. She has jaime,qyburn,and the mountain. The people of KL would have ripped her apart. And the gold cloaks would have let them.
