Japanese A Song of Ice and Fire World Map

Recommended Posts

I hope this isn't old news.

Hayakawa Publishing Inc., the Japanese publisher for A Song of Ice and Fire (æ°·ã¨ç‚Žã®æŒ) published on their site a map of the Seven Kingdoms back in April, that I thought would be of interest.

The map divides the land over the main houses.

Also, GRRM Martin has yet to update his site, so if you're curious, Samwell Tarly graces the cover for the third volume of the Japanese edition of A Storm of Swords - http://bookweb.kinokuniya.co.jp/imgdata/large/4152087889.jpg

As with the first two volumes of A Storm of Swords, the illustrator is also Yasushi Suzuki.

There are also new paperback covers for A Clash of Kings, comprising of 5 volumes in all (5 new covers).

All 5, as well as covers for all the other books (except the hardcover books for A Game of Thrones) can be viewed here - http://hayakawa-online.co.jp/SOIAF/book.html

While we're waiting for A Dance with Dragons, Japan is still waiting for A Feast for Crows.

Those look really nice.

Is there anywere we can find a link to larger size images of the paperback covers?

I clicked on them but I was sent to the page for ordering a copy of the book. Since I don't understand a word of Japanese navigating that page is complicated for me.

There are no larger versions of the paperback covers on the publisher's site, but I can try checking out retailer sites tomorrow night, so I have to get back to you on that. GRRM actually has a larger pic of the first paperback cover from the Japanese A Clash of Kings on his site though.

In the meanwhile (I posted this in the other topic) here is a higher resolution image and without any text obstructing the view of Yasushi Suzuki's depiction of Sansa Stark (Cover 1 of A Storm of Swords).

You can make it into a wallpaper.

Great map, I only have one problem with it. House Tully should extend down around the lake and Harrenhal where the Lannisters lands are and it should extend up where they show house Frey because Frey is not one of the great houses.

Nice art. Over on the RASFWR-J Google group, we would regularly dicsuss the Japanese covers for the WoT books, which were far superior to those by Daryl Sweet.

So can we identify all the characters that appear on each of the covers. I can see a couple that are clearly meant to be Tyrion, and the very first cover is clearly Jon Snow (with the white wolf). What about the others?

The map is beutiful, and not showing the exact borders but an approximate area is a good idea. However, there are mistakes. The Frey lands should not be differentiated from the Tullys, and either way Seagard does not belong to them. Also, Dorne should extend a little to the North to include Starfall, the Reach a little to the South to include Oldtown and Horn's Hill, and the Stormlands should have their portion of the Marches.

That assuming the map is intended for to publish at the beginning of ACOK. If it's for the beginning of ASOS, also the conquests of the Ironborn in the North should be included.

AGOT1-Jon and Ghost

AGOT2-Dany riding Silver

AGOT3-Tyrion reading a book

AGOT4-Catelyn visiting Ned in the Godswod.

AGOT5-Eddard

ACOK1-Arya seeing Yoren die

ACOK2-Theon sailing to Pyke

ACOK3-Sansa prisoner in the Red Keep

ACOK4-Davos at the Blackwater Bay

ACOK5-Bran and Summer

There's a second artist for ACOK and ASOS. A shame, because the first one was much better IMO. I would say the depictions are (in order) Arya, Sansa, Catelyn, Tyrion and Sam, but those are harder to identify

ACOK1-Arya

ACOK2-Sansa

(I think, IMO those two are the ugliests and the harderst ones to identify

It depends what point in the series' timeline the map is supposed to represent. At the beginning of the series, that is true, but presently the Lannisters hold Harrenhal and the Freys can hardly be said to be beholden to house Tully.

A Feast for Crows volumes 1 & 2 just released in Japan on July 24, 2008. Yasushi Suzuki returns to provide the cover art for both volumes (he also did all three covers for A Storm of Swords).

A Feast for Crows volume 1 - Jaime Lannister -

A Feast for Crows volume 2 - Cersei Lannister - http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/images/...392&s=books

I don't think the Daenerys preview chapter is provided in the Japanese language version of these books, but there is a note from the translator included.
