Matarreyes Posted December 13, 2008 Share Posted December 13, 2008 The 1000 names in the books. From Daenerys to, say, Qyburn. Do you think you have the pronunciation of all of them figured out? I fully expect to get a couple of surprises from that direction (or a ton of them, since pronunciation changes are harsher for non-english readers). Maybe people who listened to the audiobooks could tell if there were some unexpected differences, and if they were shocking to the ear or not. I also seem to remember from somewhere that GRRM never gave any guides on the subject, so maybe the pronunciation can yet change. Thoughts? With Sword of Truth series came out, I knew there were several shocks in regards to names, but the whole tv series has been butchered so it didn't make much of a difference. He did also write up a list of his own pronunciations and it can be found on the [url="http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/"]"So Spake Martin[/url]" section of Westeros.org, but as was said by someone upthread, he has also always maintained that since it's a fantasy world, anyone reading it can pronounce things however they want. When I went to his signing in NYC for Feast for Crows, I was surprised by how Brienne was pronounced though. That said, I pray to all Westeros gods no one will ever read Jaime Lannister´s name like that. It´d be like nails on a window. //shudders//. (I seem to recall somewhere that hard C was the Roman way, and soft C was the ecclestial latin way... someone more knowledgeable should be able to correct me if I am wrong) I always thought Cersei was to be pronounced Ker-sei, not ser-sei...
