Hmmmm when they say they have counted how many times Sandor's name is mentioned, do they also add all the times he is referred to as the Hound?

@Branchcandy

Sandor as Azor Ahai: I think that is Jon

Sandor as the PTWP: I think that is Dany

Sandor as the Reformed Beast to someone's beauty: It does seem to have huge hints that this is possible.

Sandor as High Septon (we've talked on this a bit already): Not as High Septon. No.

Sandor as champion of the Faith: Possible, but I think it would be yet another character too far in terms of religious conversion to an extreme. We already have Lancel, Damphair, Selyse etc.

Sandor as dragon rider: Well I think he would prefer to be sitting on one than in front of one. The pink bow might make him feel self concious though. :blushing:

Sandor as dragon feed :(: Actually if Tyrion gets a Dragon and gets to the Vale....then yes I can see him being crisped while trying to protect Sansa. :crying:

Sandor sent to the wall for Saltpans: I still think Ser Bonifer Hasty my actually give him a fair trial and get him pardoned for that if he has a talk with the EB.

Sandor working for Faegon and co: Given Faegon's mother's fate at the hands of Gregor, then I'm not sure that this would be a great working relationship. However if Faegon marries Sansa, I can see Sandor rejoining the KG and being her personal bodyguard. Escorting her to the Godswood where they could pray together etc.

Sandor helping to restore Sansa to Winterfell: God I wish, but the only way they could remain together is an illicit affair (like Jaime and Cersei), or for her to stay Alayne, which means no more Winterfell.

Sandor as Daenerys' mount to love :P: I don't think so, but it would be very funny.

Sandor as King of Westeros: King consort to Dany? Well maybe but I think not.

Sandor as homely farmer: He did seem quite content as one of the smallfolk.

Sandor as Lord Clegane: That would be nice, but I think the Clegane Lands will go elsewhere. If he and Alayne married though, then their children would be Lords as she would inherit LF's title, and maybe not Harrenhal, but certainly the Fingers' property.

Sandor as R'hllor convert: I am really not sure how he feels about R'hllor.

Sandor as Littlefinger killer: Well if he tells Sansa about LF betraying Ned, then he would be doing it indirectly.

Sandor the avenger ( kiling Gregor): Possibly.

Sandor the baby daddy: Again it would be a nice ending for him to get married and have kids etc, but I doubt it will happen. An illegitimate child is probably the best he could hope for.

Sandor the husband: See above.

Sandor the lover: See above.

Sandor the confidante: With cups of tea and Lemoncakes?

etc etc

So I finally got the other Dunk & Egg stories! Read the Hedge Knight last night! Poor Egg. AND ALL MY CREYS FOR AEMON WHO WAS ONLY MENTIONED TANGENTIALLY AS BEING SO USELESS THEY SENT HIM TO THE CITADEL!

Anyway, this is totally on topic, because as I was reading I couldn't help but be reminded of Sandor sometimes, the way Dunk spoke to Egg. Threatened to beat him bloody frequently, etc. (before he learned who Egg was, and just thought him a lowly commoner turned squire) Not nearly as rough and gruesome as Sandor, but still!

Holy capslock, woman!

Well Aemon gets a little more mentions in the next one, no worries! Though I will say they are small mentions, but better than the usless thing, you know. As for that, I can defo see what you saw there. Another thing I was reminded of is Dunk and Egg have moments that remind me of the Stannis-Davos buddyship. Egg has his princely moments that remind me of Stannis, the two are also quite crafty, younger brothers, etc. Dunk is quite honorable, but he's like Davos in the respect that he will do what he has to do within reason. For example, say he got knighted before Ser Arlan passed, clout a boy in the ear, so on. And he also has some Davos-esque lines like "I call you liar." (Though I think that was in the third novella, well, you'll see).

And of course, he also reminds me of Brienne, but of course he would as they're related. ;)

EDIT: And, and, he's very like Davos in the future role he plays to his Prince. A lowborn man, both are from Flea Bottom, comes to be a knight, and eventually plays a large role in his prince's court. Davos as a Hand OTK, Dunk as LC of the KG.

Fantabulous list, brash, though I'd add (given my annoying perseverative interest in the Arya connection):

Sandor as half of Avenging Assassins badass power ship: Sandrya!

Sandor as reflective of Arya's early persona, perhaps assisting in restoring her conscience/identity.

Sandor as R'hllor opponent

and.... (my new fav crack)

Sandor as Melisandre's eventual killer!

Sandor as dragon feed

How about Sandor as dragon-slayer? Kleos (immortal fame) came up in another thread; in Indo-European culture, the most sure way to kleos is slaying a dragon. Somebody's got a date with Drogon coming up...

And for your afternoon amusement:

I think we can all agree that everybody NEEDS MOAR HOUND!

condolences on your uncle.

Hmn but wouldn't Harry being killed by Daenerys's dragons mean that Sansa would become shudder Tyrion's prisoner once more?

That's where Sandor would come in, I guess ;) His days of playing the traditional warrior saviour are over methinks, however, and if he ends up "saving" Sansa somehow, it won't be charging up to the Gates of the Moon on a warhorse. I think the memory of the unkiss will somehow be important here, perhaps even Sandor's cloak, if we knew where the hell it was. Or maybe he'll be in disguise as a poor brother visiting the Vale, and something will happen then.

Not necessarily! Sansa might get away whether on her own or through assistance of some other character - Sandor, Brienne, etc. Also, Tyrion, ahem, well we shouldn't take it for granted that he'll undeniably be with Daenerys or convince her to let him have Sansa if he is an advisor/whatever. I doubt their marriage will last, and I think Dany might be convinced to annull it using her queenly powers (or whatever).

(btw, Tyrion has odd connections to Alexander the Great, imo, but that's another story)

What are the connections here?

When I was doing name analysis a name I came across was (greek, I believe) "Trymian" [trih-mee-ihn] which means "encourages"

Right, so, I was planning on putting an emoticon as my answer for each one but that's not going to do, so...

Sandor as Azor Ahai --- It is KNOWN! /tokenresponse. In all seriousness, no, I think it's someone else.

Sandor as the PTWP --- Meh, I'm going to go with the prophecy that it's someone born of Aerys and Rhaella's line so that has to be Dany since there's no other living, irrefutable options [Faegon if he is what he says he is, he certainly has the Targ temper, but I still vote bugger that]

Sandor as the Reformed Beast to someone's beauty --- :eyesroll: Does this even need to be debated? We'll never guess who the beauty half of the equation is. NEVER I SAY! ;)

Sandor as High Septon --- It would be the best possible outcome for a parody, but in all realness? No, no, and definitely not.

Sandor as champion of the Faith --- And deny Lancel his shot to feel his uh, faith... throbbing as he rides forth to defend the Church? Come on, that would just be cruel. You know he's never going to get a chance to use ......his faith again. xD

Sandor as dragon rider --- *side leer* I wanna see some moarr "She rode behind him, her arms clasped tight around the Hound's Sandor's chest" action. So sue me. If the pink ribbon bothers him, he's just gonna have to get over it. Take it like a man.

Sandor as dragon feed --- :crying: The only appropriate reaction to this is say, "GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD!"

Sandor sent to the wall for Saltpans --- Sandor meets Dolorous Edd, and they fall madly in love, living out their days, Edd deadpanning, and Sandor rasping and cursing. Beautiful. "Sandor, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." "Bugger that, and bugger you."

Sandor working for Faegon and co. --- Unlikely. I dunno, just can't see it, for many a reason. The family bad blood was already mentioned. There's the fact that Sandor may not be as great a fighter, also, the Targs are on the opposite side of people like the Stark girls. Sandor working against them? I don't buggering think so.

Sandor helping to restore Sansa to Winterfell --- So fucking beautiful that it will never happen. /cryingforever

Sandor as Daenerys' mount to love --- OH DAMN. Can you imagine the amount of vitriol Daenerys would get? I mean people who didn't even like the San-San would be slamming Dany for her "lusty ways" if she got it on with the Sandor. I think it's safer both of them to keep a distance.

A la littlespider:

Sandor as half of Avenging Assassins badass power ship: Sandrya! --------------- JUST SAY NO! :ack:

Sandor as reflective of Arya's early persona, perhaps assisting in restoring her conscience/identity --- I think he's already chipped in the bit he was meant to give ot help her along her arc. Mercy, and oddly, seeing rather than looking. I mean that in she sees him, the human, rather than looking at the monster.

Sandor as R'hllor opponent --- Only if they interfered with him or something he cared about could I see him actively working against this faith. 'Course he may already hold a grudge due to the Rhollor-thumping BwB.

Sandor as Melisandre's eventual killer! --- Intriuging but I don't think their paths cross.

How about Sandor as dragon-slayer? --- Hell to the yes. St. George here he comes. I see this as a distinct possibilty. Something that would tickle GRRM's fancy, perhaps he planned it all along. Introducing a burned character in the first book who goes on to slay a dragon? Possibly to protect his slightly disillusioned princess, or to save the QI if it came to that?

Given that Sandor is so good at taming Stranger... what is the likelihood of him also being able to tame one of Dany's unruly dragons? Or do you think his fear of fire would be a game-breaker.

Lady Candace got me thinking though...

[crackpot] What if Sansa were trapped in the impregnable Eyrie and the normal passage was blocked -- either destroyed or blocked by winter -- and the only way to rescue her was by dragon. Would Sandor then be brave enough and overcome his fire fear to save her via dragon? [/crackpot]

Isn't he already Lord Clegane? Technically, anyway? And if the Lannisters lose their power over the west (likely, imo) who will stop him from taking his seat?

I'm not sure, because it never referenced Gregor being Lord Clegane. I think it's like Griffin's Roost, where they only have a knight in charge.

 So wicked, Lady Candace! Ok, I think everyone gave great responses, (with more to come), but what about Sandor as the valonquar? One brother acts as Cersei's champion, the other as her eventual killer. And he would have motive - If Cersei finds out where Sansa is hiding, and if she realises that the younger Queen from the prophecy isn't Marg, based on Marg's certain demise at that trial....

I was thinking that Sandor is Gregor's only heir. If Gregor was Lord Clegane (he's never referred to as LC, but with his father dead, who else would be?) then his only heir would assume the title, no?

But the thing is, it's possible there never WAS a Lord Clegane. The Cleganes were landed knights, not necessarily lords. You don't need to be a Lord to have a keep and some lands, iirc.

Cleganes weren't 'lords' in no case, they are 'too young' nobles to be a lord.

Thanks for the clarification -- but Sandor is still entitled to the lands? I mean, he really needs someplace to take his future wife . . . ;) ;)

He's probably been attainted but he would be, otherwise. And the Cleganes are landed knights, not lords. I'm too lazy to look it up for you right now, maybe I'll do it later, but there is a post in the SSM where GRRM explains the difference between landed knights and lords.

I'm afraid he isn't - imho Greg's third wife is heir of Clegane's lands, if she is still alive of course.

Second, as a member of KG he is forbidden from owning land, taking a wife and fathering children (I know, I know, he deserted. So Sandor would need a really good lawyer... :D )

Actually, I know the difference, I just never bothered to consider the Clegane family status before. As to being attainted -- doesn't that require a formal declaration or a confession? But even if he were attainted by the Lannister/Tyrell regime, I don't expect that to stick once the new monarch (whoever that may be) takes over.

ETA: I don't expect the KG thing to stick, either. Surely Aegon or Dany will want to choose their own KG.

And yes I'm projecting wildly, but I think it's safe to say that Sandor's future won't depend on or resemble his past in any way. Except maybe for his crush . . .

For one thing, he took vows taking him out of the line of inheritance. So they might not have bothered with attainting him, anyway. But I think he's in big trouble regardless of who takes over, because of Saltpans. Dany might not care that he deserted Joffrey and the battlefield, but she's going to care about him chewing up the breasts of a little girl. And so will most other lords -- it was called "exceptionally vicious" "monstrous" and similar adjectives.

Its part of why I think he is doomed if he ever leaves the QI.
