:laugh: All this is also true if Stannis sided with Renly. Yes I know his pride prevented him from working out a deal with Renly, but really Renly had a way bigger army, way more support, and just allied himself with the second most powerful house in Westeros. All Stannis had to do was just say, hey, you have a much better chance of becoming king and ending all this than me. So I'll throw my support behind you and give up my claim to the throne, letting it pass to you. And maybe in return he could have made some demands of Renly...

You can blame Stannis just as much as Renly...really it should be: The Baratheon brothers squabbling over the throne...

They both had one :P Stannis got killing Renly and Renly got crowning himself. Technically, Ned named/made Stannis king/heir. :P The difference for me is, Stannis stands for the rule of law, Renly stands for "might makes right." I can't get away from the fact that Stannis has the better claim. :D

If Renly sides with Stannis, chances are King's Landing falls long before Robb dies. Arya can go home, Sansa can go home. Cat lives, Robb lives, etc. All the Lannisters in King's Landing die, Tywin is on his own because he can't offer the Tyrells a marriage alliance, so Tywin dies.

ETA: Also, Robb has two choices rather than three when he talks about pledging fealty, and Stannis would have the better claim and the better army, so Robb might even ally with him right away.

Yeah, but how does any of this affect Renly? This isn't the 'would things have been better for my favorite character if this hadn't happened' round, this is the mistake round. A mistake has to be measured against the goal of that specific character, not against how things turned out for everyone else.

The fact that things would have been better for Robb or for Stannis if Renly hadn't crowned himself has nothing to do with it, unless Renly's goal was to make things better for Robb and Stannis, which I doubt it was. As HJ says, Renly had no way of knowing that Stannis had magic and without it things are likely to have gone very well for Renly, and he's the one in question here.

I guess it just depends on if you just look at the result or if you take into account the information available to the character at the time the decision was made. :) I wonder what would have happened if Stannis hadn't shadowbabied Renly as that didn't turn out very well for Stannis either...
