Knight Of Winter
I think that scene was in the show only, not in the books.

SeanF
In the Books, the Iron Price, is the price that you pay, namely, risking your life in battle, in order kill your enemy, which entitles you to take his jewellery. In the show, the Iron Price is imposed on others. Knight Of Winter
That means Ser Rodrik paid the iron price for his life right? No, that just means show and book have different concepts of "iron price". SeanF explained it nicely.
Kienn
That means Ser Rodrik paid the iron price for his life right?According to the show, yes (the show doesn't really use it consistently, but dagmer did specifically say that for Rodrik)According to the books, no.According to how the books use the phrase, paying the iron price for your own life would be fighting your way free (i.e. killing your opponents who have captured you or who are fighting against you).According to the books "paying the iron price" is compared to "paying the gold price" because when paying gold you GIVE someone gold for something, but when paying iron you GIVE them iron (i.e. kill them). It's not really something you ever would want to "charge" someone else, because that would be telling them to kill you for something of yours. Masamune
In the show, the Iron Price is imposed on others. But in the show Balon specifically asks Theon if he paid the iron price or the gold for his fancy threads.
bloody_mummer
"Paying the iron price" in the books means killing the owner of the object and taking it by force. Giving them iron vs giving them gold.
