65536ob
It is stated that the links for maesters who have studied magic are made from valyrian steel, where would the citadel get the valyrian steel from

Black Mike Secret
Maybe they are recycled. Maesters come and go.That seems like a good explanation. Do maester's have their rings sent back to Oldtown after their deaths? For some reason I always thought so.

For some reason I always thought so.You know, I don't recall. The chains being sent back to Oldtown sounds right, but maybe they're buried with them... I just can't remember. :Offtothereaserchcave!:

Eustace Osgrey
Yeah. Dead maesters sounds about right.I had a separate theory. I always saw the Maester's as part of a larger conspiracy, so mayhaps they have had the secret to creating Valyrian steel since they are supposed to have a copy of practically every book. Maybe they have been hiding it for centuries (perhaps so men can't use dragonsteel against the Others they believe to be returning inevitably?) RumHam
While the secret of creating valyrian steel was lost with The Doom, certain people are able to reforge existing valyrian steel. Like Tobho Mott who learned it in Qohor.
Kahl Trollo
A chain link is not a huge thing to forge, and it's said to Bran that only one in a hundred ever earns that link. So for every thousand maesters, that's 10 links of valeryan steel. This isn't saying what they might know, or what they might have - but putting out there that the organization doesn't need a vast store of it, or the secret of making it for this to be possible. Gonzalo
Since Valyrian steel its impossible to forge or alter without the proper knowledge... do some maester's know how to work Valyrian Steel to make it into chain links and then complete the chain? Gnivil
Since Valyrian steel its impossible to forge or alter without the proper knowledge... do some maester's know how to work Valyrian Steel? I'd imagine so, there's a maester's ring for smithing, so I'd imagine the experts in that specialisation of being a maester would know how to reforge it. At the very least the archmaester of smithing would know how to reforge valyrian steel.
The Kinkslayer
From the flea market in Vaes Dothrak :dunno:, maybe they are just faking it with high carbon/low carbon folded steel
Stenjen Bark
Perhaps they can only earn the chain if they can create the chain itself from something else using that magical knowledge?
Gendrys Forge
Nevermind the chains. Where did Xaro Xhan Daxos get all the VS for his vault door?
RumHam
Nevermind the chains. Where did Xaro Xhan Daxos get all the VS for his vault door? Unless I'm remembering wrong, that was something they invented for the TV show.

Khal Shaggydog
There are also some Maesters with other stuff made of VS. Marwyn, I believe, has a mask, ring, and rod. So there is some of the stuff around. The whereabouts of VS is a huge missing topic in the actual series, but not on the boards. We simply have almost no info outside of what is explicitly mentioned. But Jaime or Tyrion says something about a hundred or couple hundred VS blades owned but the various noble houses of Westeros, and we have an accounting of only a handful. Longclaw, Ice (WW and Oathkeeper), Heartsbane, Lady Forlorn, the Harlaw blade, and a couple others. We know the Targaryens had a couple, but we don't know where they are (also a pretty freaking confusing fact - how did they completely lose track of those, and why didn't crazy Aerys have one). Im of the camp that we don't know what the Maesters, or a cabal of maesters within the Citidel, are fully up to. Same goes for the Hightowers, who supposedly have a VS sword. Hopefully we'll get some info in the World app, but probably more open ended speculation. One more thought - where was the Reynes VS sword, when Tywin Castamere'd them? How did he not end up with that as part of his annihilation?

It is implied that the Drumms (ironborn) stole it from the Reynes in an Asha chapter

Maybe they have been hiding it for centuries (perhaps so men can't use dragonsteel against the Others they believe to be returning inevitably?) I have always supported the idea that the Maesters have only been reforging Valyrian Steel. However, after reading some of the ideas here I am questioning whether or not the Maesters hold the knowledge of how to forge new Valyrian Steel. There is nothing supporting this directly, but we do know that the Maesters have a multitude of rare books and a vast collection of knowledge, and are "creating" Valyrian Steel chain links.
