US Politics: A Game of Pedantry

Ok, SYC, then why is this funny to you? Michelle Obama has made an effort to ensure that children get healthy, nutritious lunches. Apparently some of them look gross. I can recall from my public school days that I was served gross lunches well before the First Lady's initiative, they were gross and unhealthy. So some kids are being served gross food, do you care about this as anything other than an avenue to zing Michelle Obama?

This is one of those areas of current political discourse I've just never been able to wrap my head around, Michelle Obama comes in for criticism for encouraging children to eat healthy and schools to serve healthy foods. How is this not something we all find agreeable, like Laura Bush's advocacy for literacy and reading?

Because Michelle Obama is clearly very different. For one, she married a probably gay Kenyan Muslim Communist Socialist. For two, she hates America. For three, she's not the right political affiliation for the breitbart crowd. It doesn't matter what initiative she was behind, it would be bad and horrible and unAmerican. Because that's mainstream politics to half of this country.

Kids complained about their school lunches before Michelle Obama and they'll complain about them after Michelle Obama. But lets not deny the rightwing their latest circlejerk.

And this is fun. Emails show GOP consultants "almost paranoid" mission to circumvent Florida's gerrymandering ban

The website isn't loading for me now so I can't quote it, but its just a reminder of the GOP playbook: if you can't win by playing dirty racial politics or lying or spending six years doing everything you can to make sure the economy doesn't recover, then just outright cheat.

Since you wrote it can I use this quote in a signature?

The FDA is about to take unprecedented step and requires chain restaurants, vending machines, grocery stores, coffee shops and pizza joints will soon have to display detailed calorie information on their menus.

Very nice!

Rand Paul Declares War on ISIS- And Allows Boots on the Ground

In a draft of the resolution obtained by The Daily Beast, Paul states that “the organization referring to itself as the Islamic State has declared war on the United States and its allies” and that ISIS “presents a clear and present danger to United States diplomatic facilities in the region, including our embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and consulate in Erbil, Iraq.”

The Obama administration has justified the bombing campaign against ISIS by claiming that it is enabled by the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Afghanistan, passed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, and the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq. Paul’s resolution would terminate the latter and place an expiration date on the former, one year after the passing of his resolution.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Paul’s resolution will allow for limited use of boots on the ground “as necessary for the protection or rescue of members of the United States Armed Forces or United States citizens from imminent danger [posed by ISIS]… for limited operations against high value targets,” and “as necessary for advisory and intelligence gathering operations.”

I applaud the effort to require Congressional approval for action against ISIS, it's really tough for me to see how the 2001 and 2002 authorizations can possibly cut it. Pretty interesting though to see Rand Paul openly in support of foreign intervention, even to the extent of supporting ground troops. There was no chance I would ever have supported Rand Paul for President, but I was hoping to see a candidate on the Republican debate stage who, like his father, took a firm anti-interventionist stance. Now it seems he wants to posture as interventionist-lite, basically supportive of everything Obama is doing, but insisting on authorization and a timeline for re-authorization. I guess it's better than nothing, but one wonders why he's so willing to compromise on this issue, while he voted against an NSA reform effort that sorely needed his vote on the grounds that it didn't go far enough.

This seems less than principled to me, and more like he's gearing up to run for President and avoiding taking any national security stances too far outside the Republican mainstream. I'll be interested to see if there's any meaningful backlash against him among libertarians, or if he's too much their darling at this point for them to care.

Related to the new school lunch standards: I can no longer send cookies or cake for my kids class on their birthdays, as the school can not have these distributed to the kids, as it violates the nutrition guidelines. The teachers cannot have any food for the children at any parties during the year, as this violates the nutrition guidelines as well. Not even veggie trays are allowed.

Thanks Michelle Obama!

Are you claiming that Michelle Obama personally set the school nutrition policies on your kids' school district?

Because if you are actually claiming that, then that's a pretty ignorant and stupid claim.

This is not true. The new FDA guidelines have absolutely nothing to say about food brought in from home, including snacks that are distributed for birthday parties. See here.

There won't be any backlash from the libertarians because rand paul is both tough on foreign terrorists and want to protect your freedom against a snooping state .... win win!

Where is this? Here, in NYC, we were able to bring chips, cupcakes, cookies, etc ... for my daughter's kindergarten Halloween party.

The school board, in interpreting the new regulations, has stated that parents can no longer send in food for the classrooms.
