First of My Name
In Dany's vision Rhaegar says 'his will be the song of ice and fire.' SoIaF hasn't been mentioned anywhere else yet, though Meera and Jojen pledge their loyalty Bran by 'swearing it by ice and fire.' So, what's the song of ice and fire? My first thought was a song for a king, but it may also have something to do with AAR or simply the elements.
Beric Zoolander
The Song of the Great Battle to come perhaps. R'holler vs the Great Other... Good Vs. Evil. The Prince who was promised? AA reborN!?
Starfell
I think that it's probably the second Batttle for the Dawn and possibly something more fundamental about the place of magic within the world, although I doubt Rhaegar really knew the scale of the prophecy that he was dealing with
winteriscome
Bit of crackpot but can it also refer to the clash of Ned's sword "Ice" and the Lightbringer "Fire"?
Lion of Judah
An obvious answer is Jon, but I think there are numerous meanings.

My first thought was a song for a king, but it may also have something to do with AAR or simply the elements. It doesn't have to do with AAR, at least that's not likely what Rhaegar was referring to. AAR appears to be a R'hllor specific hero. He's referring to the Targaryen prophecy about The Prince Who Was Promised. And the song in general, I think, refers to the Second Battle for the Dawn, and Jon more specifically. The son Rhaegar sought to create by binding fire with ice. Blackfyre the Bold
I think Rhaegar and past Targaryens misinterpreted the prophecy. IMO it is the song of two elements/people, no more no less. I interpret it as a union between the two, whether figuratively or literally.
DavosSeaworthy
Jon Snow.
Maester Joe
I have two theories:ASoIaF could refer to the Others (ice) and dragons (fire).OR it could simply refer to winter and summer.
LuisDantas
The most obvious meaning is that it is the pathos of Westerosi life, torn between the unforgiving Winters and the firm grip of the Targaryens and their legacy and forged by those influences, which it both resents and is proud of.But Rhaegar probably had a somewhat more specific meaning in mind. Kienn
It's the story of the sword Ice, the events around it as it's destroyed and moved around then reforged into the sword Fire.
Jaqen H'gcarl
Yes, it can probably mean several things. Personally I think the entire saga is "A Song of Ice and Fire" but perhaps there is something more specific within that saga, a more "defined" song of ice and fire.. we can only wait and see. or speculate :D
Kyoti
The song of Ice is "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice and the song of Fire is "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, but I'm not sure about this "Song of ice AND Fire" you speak of.
They see me R'hollin
Some say the world will end in fire,Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desireI hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice,I think I know enough of hateTo say that for destruction iceIs also greatAnd would suffice. It's the story of fiery desire meeting icy hate. Stannis Eats No Peaches
I thought the "song" part was just another way of saying "story" but as for the "ice and fire" bit, it could mean simply opposites or it could be more specific like Others and dragons, Jon and Dany, or just Jon by himself. I don't know.
Teal'c
If you don't think it's Jon Snow, you know nothing...
Dolorous Nedd
Jon Snow.I agree. Jon is the union of Targ (fire) and Stark (ice). At this point I assume a lot of people (who don't visit forums like this) think it's going to be a union of Jon and Dany.
Howling Mad
Its a duet between Vanilla Ice and Earth, Wind and Fire :cool4:
Bran Swift
I remember that in this interview ( questions are in Spanish, George answers in English), someone asked GRRM the same question. Obviously he isn't going to give plot points away, but he said that it has multiple meanings and is all about interpretation (I'm paraphrasing from memory).I think the most obvious interpretation is that the 'song' is the epic saga, 'ice' is to do with the others, and 'fire' is to do with dragons coming back into the world. But really there is no specific meaning, it is all interpretation. georgiatargaryen
I don't think it really has one specific representation. I think it's more thematic. There are lots of examples of "ice" interacting with "fire" in the series. The only explicit mention of the song was by Rhaegar, and while it does seem like that in particular has some relation to prophecy nevertheless there are still multiple interpretations of the series title and I think that is how George intended it.
