How valuable is a dragon in open battle?

Brute of Bracken

Recommended Posts

It all depends on how big it is. A big dragon is very valuable while a lesser one is less so.

Yet a small dragon is no less useful for reconnaissance than a big one. It just needs the rider to understand what is going on on ground, and how it is relevant to her or his army.

Aegon and his sisters had their three dragons on the field at one time and it decimated a 50,000 man army so they are definitely effective.

The Field of Fire was essentially a perfect Storm in Aegon's favor.

The forces were Lords not used to fighting together, not accustomed to dragons, and marched onto a dry(forest fire ready) field. The weather was also perfect for dragons.

With all that, they only killed 4,000 of a 55k force. That did not even achieve technical decimation(1/10).

Also, note how common folk with everyday weapons were able to take down several dragons in the Dragonpit in TPATQ. Dragon armor is not as resistant as we might think.

I'd take that account with a grain of salt though, it was written by a Maester who have their own agenda to push with regards to dragons.

On the other hand a lot of TPATQ has a decidedly pro-Targaryen tilt, but then anything else would probably not have ended well, seeing as the Targaryens were still undisputed rulers at the time of TPATQ's (in-world) publication.

How about a circular formation of scorpions / archers? That way, whichever side the dragon is coming to attack from, it is always directly coming towards a bunch of scorpions. Given enough scorpions, a few bolts should be able to hit its eye / kill the rider

won't work, if the dragon climbs up into the sky and shoots straight down, the scorpians can't shoot at 90 degree angles and also you have to know what weather contions are you facing. You wouldn't use those in 30mph winds or higher and a full size dragon can use that as an advantage

True. The strategy should be to take down the rider first.

You will need a highly skilled archer or scorpian operatoer inm order to do that. It's risky but I don't think one will use that tactic when facing a dragon a first time, let alone a few.

I included scorpions as they did indeed kill an adult dragon. They might take time to turn, which means they will fire slower and less controlled shots, but they have longer range and are more deadly. If you have enough of them, it should compensate for the slower speed and accuracy. Mangonels which spray stones should also be particularly useful to hit the rider,

Even scorpions turn too slow. The dragon would need to cross a pre-set line of fire.

Similar for mangonels. Who have an abyssmal rate of fire as well.

You can't fit enough scorpions into a flat surface to cover a 3d space in the air. It's just pure luck.

A prepared force will be a major problem for a Dragon. That would be where a human fighting force would come in. With recon from a rider, a force of heavy horse would attack the stationary weapons. Even Aegon had some humans fighting for him.

As to trying to get the rider, the older dragons were huge, coming at ground forces from above limits targeting the riders.

The dragons in.question were chained/confined to the dragon pit, and the majority of them were juvenile dragons anyway. None of them were in "open battle" and only Draemfyre was able to use their primary advantage (i.e. flying)

In terms of open battle, they are probably.very formidable, and can only.be brought down by pure luck

Syrax was not confined.

Dragon's are strong, but it does depend on who the rider is and what the Dragon's age is. For a green rider like Danaerys and a relatively young Drogon and their 8,000 men, I'd reckon 20,000 men, well spread out with scorpions and throwing spears ( 10,000 infantry to engage unsullied with knights in bbetween and 10,000 archers/spearmen). I do not think dragons have an unlimited amount of flame, and have a reloading period in between, and that is when you aim your scorpions at them. ALso, Dragonfire probably doesn't have an unlimited range, so the dragon has to stoop atleast somewhat low , which would make him vulnerable to ranged weapons. Although the best idea would be to kill the dragon rider, and let the dragon fly off after that.

Also, the field of fire was one example of Dragon decimation ( even then, it took 3 drags a day to kill 4000 men) and Harrenhall the other, but since then, people have become more aware of what their facing, so I doubt they'll field an army of 50,000 without spreading it out.

The question is, can the dragon reload while back above bowshot?

From awoiaf it seems alot depends on the dragon riders skill, and the ability to avoid detection. For instance you would not want to take on scorpions, or tons of archers at once. However scouting your enemies movements, recognizing the weaknesses, and then engaging your enemy usually where the foot soldiers are many you have a clear advantage. Also the size of your dragon is a big plus. The bigger the dragon, the more fire he can spread at a higher level on the battle field.

As a rough guide for Dany's dragons:

The Daznak Pit incident left 214 dead and about three times as many injured. All of this death and injury may not have been done specifically by Drogon, but the chaos was a direct consequence of his presence. So they are pretty deadly, even if just because of the chaos they cause.

ETA:

Also, winds spoiler

Rhaegal seems to be pretty deadly to the ships out in the Bay
