Forgot to mention before, Dobro is in communication and participating, so we're good as far as judges. Sorry if I'm a little paranoid about people bailing.

ETA: I now have both my verdicts complete as judge... we should have this round wrapped up as soon as another verdict comes in on that battle. The forum has been driving me nuts, I'm really glad we'll have this wrapped up before Season 5 gets too close.

Yep, we now have a majority on both battles, with Dobro's verdict still out on Riverlands-North. I'll be posting write-ups for these and the battlefield for the final over the weekend, as the kids will be with their Granny and I'll have some precious "me-time".

ETA: Everything's in and decided. I'll have results posted asap (which may be tomorrow).

Semifinal #1: The Crownlands (Captn Captain) vs. Dorne (Bright Blue Eyes)

Setting: Bottleneck in the Boneway

Battlefield Overview Image Link: http://postimg.org/image/fix6txokd/

Previous Info:

Battlefield Description:

The Crownlands and Dorne find themselves in mortal conflict at a narrow pass in the Boneway.

The field consists of grasslands at this particular pass through the Boneway, as two armies find themselves facing one another from opposite directions. At elevation 0, (light green), the land is flat, and narrows to a small passage 250m wide at the center of the field. To each side of the field, to the east and west, lies an available incline (yellow, arrows pointing uphill, the dashed line towards the north/south border on each side marks the start of the incline, the dashed line towards the center marks the end of the incline) that climbs to 20m in elevation toward a flat plateau at the center on either side, semicircular towards the passageway below. The border between elevation floor and the elevated palisades (solid black line) is a sheer granite cliff. The land on the plateaus is flat (dark green), lying above the passageway below at a height of 20m.

The Crownlands approach from the north, Dorne from the south.

ETA: Disregard the crosshairs on the image link, an artifact of AutoCAD I use to model the fields.

ETA2: Forgot weather conditions. Conditions here have recently been dry with no rain for several weeks, with no wind to speak of.

Crownlands Deployment as seen by Dorne:

The Crownlands general is Barristan the Bold

On the plateau at the eastern neutral zone, 4 pike units are arrayed into an impressive phalanx wide enough to encompass the incline further behind them to the north. On their western flank, out on the semi-circular palisade, is a unit of infantry that hug the main block of pike's right flank in a slightly loose block formation that is 5 ranks deep and 200 men wide, and next to them to the west is a unit of crossbowmen. Behind the pike phalanx is another unit of crossbowmen in loose formation. Behind these crossbowmen is another unit of pike.

Three units of heavy cavalry are positioned to the north, at the bottom of the incline on the flat ground. These cavalry units are arranged into three groups, the Western, Eastern and Central. The Eastern unit is positioned between the western end and center of the beginning of the incline, the central cavalry at the west corner of the flat ground and the beginning of the eastern incline, while the Western formation is situated in line with the other two, north-northeast of the lower passage. Each cavalry unit is 100 men long and 5 ranks deep.

Barristan's command unit, along with the Kingsguard interspersed with them, are positioned on the slopes of the eastern incline.

Dornish Deployment as seen by the Crownlands:

The Dornish are commanded by Prince Doran Martell, who has miraculously had his head reattached after the previous battle, and his person reanimated by what is surely some dark blood magic. Why, it is as if he had never died at all.

Deployment diagram (really like when you guys send these): http://imgur.com/au8SEge

10. Crossbowmen, Lord Quentyn Quorgyle
11. Crossbowmen, Ser Symon Santagar
12. Around 300 wagons, filled with standard camp supplies and a variety of standard issue weapons

The two units of crossbowmen (#10 and #11 above) are with the wagons. Each wagon has one crossbowmen ahorse, with 5 other crossbowmen stationed with each wagon.
Otherwise the units are according to the diagram, Doran and Yronwood form wedges, the light cavalry loose formation in front, pikes ready to form up. Golden Company in a line.

Host's Thought: You both picked the eastern side to form up on. Can't wait to see how it plays out.

THE CROWNLANDS VS. DORNE AT THE BONEWAY
================================================================================

ACT I: ACTION! (or, How I Dared Not Give the Enemy Time To Gain Advantage)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chaos ensues immediately. Both armies waste no time springing into action.

First, the boring stuff: For the Crown, the central and western heavy cav units move for the central bottleneck below the plateau, while the eastern heavy cav begin moving southward up the incline to support the action on the plateau. Likewise, Barristan's knights and the Kingsguard, closer to the mass of troops, move southward to provide support.

And now, the fray (lots of action going on here simultaneously, I'll try to keep it cohesive): Out on the western part of the (eastern) plateau, Lord Uller's light cav sprint forward towards the western Crown crossbowmen in a straight charge. In anticipation of this, Ser Barristan has ordered the crossbowmen here to form up, pavises locked in a wall to withstand the charge. As the Dornish approach, the first volley at long range is mostly ineffective, but as the distance closes, the second volley at close range is quite devastating. The Dornish fire off a few arrows and javelins, but are largely ineffective against the defenses of the crossbowmen. Over half the Dornish riders, horse, or both fall, as the remainder crash through the shield wall to deal heavy causalities on the Crown's crossbowmen here, while suffering even more causalities themselves in the fray. A few hundred crossbowmen abandon their pavises and flee to the safety of the (simultaneously) advancing Crown forces, while a few dozen Dornish light cav, being faced with momentary isolation, retreat back around eastward to join up with the remaining light cavalry units, also in motion.

Meanwhile to the east, the primary force of Crown pike are moving southward, fanning out just a bit to form a longer line. The rear pike for the Crown move up in front of the crossbowmen, forming a wide, formidable force of 4 pike lines just under a kilometer wide, with the rear pike unit back a bit for support. The infantry unit on their western flank has formed up at an angle, keeping an eye on the action going on to their west as the Crown crossbowmen face down the charge of Dornigh light cav (previously described above).

Likewise for the Dornish, the 3 spear units form up in terchio and advance north to meet the Crown's forces, while the three other light cav units join up to the east, and also are advancing northward near the eastern edge of the field.

Doran's command unit and heavy cavalry are riding eastward towards the western flank of the Crown's forces, but are at too great a distance to arrive before the skirmish there.

The Dornish crossbowmen with the wagons leave behind their pavises and the driver for each wagon, and are moving northeast towards a common point with the tercio, while the wagon drivers begin work on lining up their wagons in an attempt to form a barricade around the western portion of the plateau. The Golden company is also advancing on the eastern flank of the tercio, making towards the common point with the spearmen and crossbowmen to their west.

ACT II: Clash of the Titans
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The western two units of Crown heavy cav have moved through the bottleneck and continue southward at a steady pace, not pushing their hoses too hard on the long trek.

Back to the fray: The Dornish crossbowmen concentrate fire into a small area of Crown pike, directly in front of the tercio (about 40 men wide), creating a gap in the lines which the tercio moves into, fighting spear to pike. The Dornish crossbowmen, having completed their task, begin retreating back to where the wagon barricade is being formed up, now getting a little more organized and looking more like a barricade. The Golden Company moves in by the tercio's western flank, fighting hand to hand with the Crown pike there. The 3 Dornish light cav units ride westward, parallel to the advancing front of Crown pike, launching arrows and javelins as they go, dealing death where they strike, weakening the lines somewhat until they are faced with the melee in the center and turn southward around it.

Meanwhile, on the western side of the front, Doran's command knights and the heavy cav unit slam into the shield wall of the Crown infantry, who are no match for the oncoming horse. The Crown infantry are successful in downing a few riders, and scattering the horse a bit into disorganization, before they meet their doom. Barristan, seeing that his flank is about to be taken, sends the western half of the reserve pike unit towards his dying infantry, while the heavy cavalry unit, his command knights, and kingsguard charge over behind them in an attempt to hold the flank. The Dornish heavy cav and knights here, while preoccupied with the infantry, are hit on their own eastern flank by the reserve pike, suffering heavy losses. As the Crown's heavy cav, command knights, and kingsguard arrive, it turns into a bloody melee. Many of the knights for both sides are forced to dismount and battle hand to hand. Robert Baratheon is salivating that he is not there to participate. Facing superior numbers and the pike, the Dornish heavy cavalry unit is lost, along with half of the command knights, before Doran and his surviving knights are forced to retreat southward, having slain half of the Crown's heavy cav unit and a small number of Kingsguard and command knights.

ACT III: The Stranger Walks Among Us
------------------------------------------------------
The two units of Crown heavy cavalry arrive at the southern base of the incline.

For the Dornish, the wagons are nearly lined up to form (at this point) a loose barricade around the western portion of the plateau, with lots of small gaps (as to this point there has only been one man on each wagon doing the work of getting the wagons lined up while battle rages on). The mass of Dornish crossbowmen, along with the surviving knights of command, arrive back at the wagons and begin to assist completing the barricade. The 3 Dornish light cavalry units have continued on westward along the front pike of the Crown, using bows and javelins against them as they go, diminishing their numbers. When they arrive to the western flank, however, they are now facing Barristan and his knights, the Kingsguard, and the half unit of Crown heavy cavalry, all ahorse once again. Under orders to avoid the heavy horse, the Dornish light cav turn south to make for the fort, but Barristan and the heavy horse (including KG) of the Crown parallel them, giving them a choice to either face them directly or retreat eastward. Given the situation, the light cavalry circle back around eastward to make another pass on the remaining pike of the crown. The immediate threat removed, Barristan turns his attention on the wagons, forcing the crossbowmen there to stop their work and protect themselves within the wagons or be ridden down, firing at the Crown horsemen as they are harried. Some of the bolts hit their mark at close range, but the vast majority of the heavy horse here remain entact as Barristan buys more time for his troops. "We can't allow that barricade to be completed!" he screams at his knights, with ferocious intensity. They continue to harry the troops of the wagons and keep them occupied (and not building), as there are not enough remaining command knights to properly engage them.

Back at the center of the front, things are going badly for the mass of Crownland's pike. The mass of Dornish spearmen in the tercio easily push through the gap created by the crossbowmen in the center of the Crown's pike, with more Crown pike to their immediate west, and the Golden Company to their east. But in the center, once the gap became open, the tercio sees the Crown crossbowmen just to the north, pavises planted to make a wall, and the Crownland's crossbowmen now perform a similar maneuver to the earlier Dornish, concentrating all their fire into the gap and the front of the tercio. With each volley a new layer of bodies is added to the pile at the center, until a mass of several hundred Dornish bodies now lay high enough to block most of the crossbow fire.

On the eastern side of the tercio, the Golden company are faring much better. The eastern half unit of reserve pike are in front of them, protecting them from crossbow fire, while the remaining front pike are to their west. They work methodically to eliminate these forces, pressing eastward on them, destroying them. They lose about a third of their own number, but all pike forces for the Crown are lost.

Likewise, the tercio continues to finish its work on the western pike of the Crown, slaying 2 men for every one they lose, with some of those losses coming from more crossbow fire to the north, when a clear shot presents itself.

The battle rages onward, the outcome yet unclear...

ACT IV: Down to the Nitty-Gritty
-------------------------------------------------------------
At the site of the tercio melee, nearly all the Crownland's pike are either dead or dying, but this now provides easier targets for the Crown crossbowmen, who continue to fire at the spearmen and the golden company. The tercio is particularly vulnerable, as the Golden Company form up behind their shields and begin to approach them. The 3 Dornish light cavalry units form a charge on the eastern side of the field, taking heavy fire but needing to break the crossbows. The Dornish lose a unit of light cav in the charge, but succeed in breaking the crossbowmen as the Golden Company finishes them off. The tercio at this point is down to about 600 men, with no enemies in their immediate vicinity.

The two Crownland's heavy cavalry units have finally arrived on the plateau to join the battle, finding that only the other heavy horse and knights still remain of their army. Dorn has ordered all his crossbowmen up around the wagons, and are waiting, separated from their other forces by the Barristan's knights, the Kingsguard, and half unit heavy cav.

One heavy cavalry unit for the Crown charges the Golden Company and rides them down, as the remaining tercio hit their flank, losing many men but press on towards the light cavalry of the Dornish, who refuse to engage them. Horses too tired to persue, they dismount and form up on foot against the remaining men of the tercios. Once these Crownmen are dismounted, the light cavalry of Dorne have a mind to harry them as they engage the spears, but the other Crown heavy cavalry unit comes at them, preventing an attack.

Meanwhile, Barristan has decided that his horse are useless in taking the barricaded forces and orders his knights, kingsguard, and heavy cavalry to dismount. They form up behind their shields and approach from two locations. It's slow work, but once the Crown's knights commandeer a wagon, they use it's supplies to set it on fire and move on to the next, killing crossbowmen and any knights as they go, but also losing their own men.

Doran considers calling his large number of crossbowmen for a final stand, but realizes they stand little chance against armored and shielded knights. At this point there is no escape, and Doran begrudgingly orders his remaining forces to surrender the day.

VICTORY FOR THE CROWN!!

Final Host Thoughts:

This was a tough one to judge, as most are... but very, very close. I'll send some thoughts on the judging privately, after the participants have a chance to read the write-up.

Semifinal #2: The Riverlands (Tyshrek Lannister) vs. The North (Nog)

Setting: Disputed Forest in the Reach

Battlefield Overview Image Link: http://postimg.org/image/3kw4mye8t/

Previous Info:

Battlefield Description:

The Riverlands and the North find themselves pitted against one another in the Kingswood.

This battlefield lies on long-disputed logging-land, dominated by a large central, circular hill, square in the middle of the field (dark green central), rising 25m at it's peak (dead center) and 1km in diameter, covered in forest. Two minor lords have for generations squabbled over the border to this timberland, and in a compromise, two 1m high walls of common stones run east-west 500m north (and likewise on the south) of the central axis of the field, serving as a border between the two lords. The northern and southern base of the central hill just touches the two walls. Forest still dominates the northern and southern edges of the battlefield inward 250m from each border from the north and south, as both lords have been hesitant to fell the timber here for risk of a confrontation that might hurt the incomes of both sides. Other than the forest of the central hill and the areas at the north and south of the field, the rest is left to open grassland (light green).

There have been occasional rain showers over the past few weeks, but generally the terrain is dry at the surface. A light wind is blowing from east to west, enough to affect missiles at long range but not at close range.

The Riverlands approach from the north, The North, again, approaches from the south.

The Riverlands deployment as seen by the North:

The Riverlands are commanded by The Blackfish.
Two units of heavy cavalry are just east and west of the central hill at the edge of the neutral zone (one east, one west).
The BwB and a unit of archers are at the edge of the neutral zone, all the way to the west.
There are another another Heavy Cavalry unit, a unit of pikes, and a Light Cavalry unit at the edge of the neutral zone, all the way to the east.

The North's deployment as seen by the Riverlands:

The Northern army is commanded by Ned Stark.

The deployment, as seen by the enemy, is as follows.

Two pikemen units take position side by side on the southern edge of the neutral zone, just next to the western end of the central hill's forest. They are arranged in 6 lines of 150 men each.
Two infantry units take position behind them in the same formation.
One archer unit takes position behind the left-hand (western) Infantry unit (again in a 6x150 formation).
Ned Stark's banner unfurls behind the right-hand (eastern) Infantry battalion, the Command unit arranged behind it. One light cavalry unit takes position behind the Command.

THE RIVERLANDS VS. THE NORTH AT THE DISPUTED HILL
===========================================================================

ACT I: INITIAL MANEUVERING
-----------------------------------------------------
Confounding to the Northern General, Riverlands troops are on the move all around the field. For the Riverlands, the western archer unit is moving southeast towards the Northern troops, while the BwB positioned near them at the western edge of the field remain suspiciously stationary. The heavy cavalry units for the Riverlands (near the hill, on the eastern and western side of it) charge southward, in particular the western heavy cav unit is charging directly towards the large mass of Northern troops near the western base of the hill, rushing them as they are reforming. The heavy cavalry unit to the far east, along with the light cavalry on their heels, begin riding eastward towards the gathering of North troops on the other side of the hill, with the western River pike marching behind them. Unseen by the North, the Blackfish and his knights, along with two pike units and a crossbow unit hidden on the central hill, begin making their way towards the apex, with pike going out in front to clear the way; while the "actual" (camouflaged) BwB stationed on the far eastern edge of the field (the western, "stationary" ones being scarecrows) move directly southward, unseen, towards the southern forest.

At the same time, the North springs into action. Ned Stark's banner on the field turns out to be a ruse, as Robb Stark, along with two units of light cavalry along with a unit each of pike and archers scramble from the southeastern edge of the forest to join the remaining Northern troops in that area. The existing two units of pike and infantry already on the field for the north quickly reform into 5 separate "Claw" squares, with a line of infantry on the front and center of each square, with two lines of pikes in between. They arrange in a sort of inverse wedge formation, with one claw at the rear center, flanked by two squares in front of them on each side. Behind them the two archer unite combine to form a dozen rows of archers, surrounded by the pike unit from the forest. The arrangement looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/2LNuY53.jpg

During this reformation, Robb sees the oncoming charge from the Riverland's heavy cavalry near the western side of the hill and quickly moves into action to meet them, providing valuable time for his troops to reform. Robb leads his knights and the 3 light cavalry units to meet the charge, and seeing themselves outnumbered more than 3-to-1, the River heavy cav are forced to turn back and retreat northward. The eastern heavy cav of the River, finding no enemy troops in their area, turn back, meeting up with the other cavalry and pike allies coming in from the east.

Unseen by the other troops, the Crannogmen have jumped the southern wall and melted into the western side of the forest, moving northward.

ACT II: Crannogmeat
--------------------------------------------
Having momentarily turned back the River heavy cav, Robb Stark sees the lone unit of Riverland archers approaching from the west, attempting to join up with those heavy cav that were just turned back. Robb takes his knights and charges for the archers, bringing two light cav units to ensure protection should that heavy cav unit try to flank them. The third light cav unit returns back to the now-reformed Northern army to provide support. The lone archer unit of the Riverlands stands no chance against the heavily armored knights, and are utterly destroyed. Robb's forces from this attack move back south and east to rejoin the rest of his army.

In the forest, a group of 200 Riverland pike are ahead of the remaining pike forces (2 units total) and moving towards the North's forces to their west. The front 200 pike meet the crannogmen who, perfectly in their element, silently make them disappear while they wait for the main force of pike. The Blackfish's command unit and the unit of crossbowmen have remained at the peak of the hill, maintaining a defensive position. The main force of the Riverland's pike move into the area of the crannogmen, and are largely slaughtered by arrows, poisoned darts, and daggers flying out of thin air. They never reach the bottom of the hill, with about 500 Riverland pike surviving as they flee back up the hill to warn the Blackfish of the danger.

The 2 units of heavy cav and 1 unit of light cav for the Riverlands, on the eastern side of the hill, have now reached the southern point where the hill meets the wall, with the following pike falling further behind them on foot. They jump the fence on their horses to continue riding around (rather than have the small expanse of forest slow them down), then jump it again once they turn back northward, closing on the North's army.

Robb has some decisions to make, now facing the Riverland's heavy cavalry unit to his north, and the 3 cavalry units (and further back, pike) approaching from his eastern flank.

The BwB has reached the southern forest, turning westward, unseen, seeking enemies or traps.

ACT III: Sometimes You're The Hammer, Sometimes You're the Nail
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Western heavy cav for the Riverlands realizes the pike from the forest are not going to arrive to join them, and charge the formation of infantry/pike squares hoping for a quick hit-and-face attack, to draw the attention of the Northmen away from their flanking forces closing from the east. The plan does not go well for those cavalry, as before they can retreat, they find themselves unable to turn, surrounded by locked shield walls on 3 sides, and pikes sticking through between the shields. A few hundred of the northmen are killed underneath a fallen horse or similar, but the unit of Riverland's cavaly is destroyed.

As the pike-infantry squares of the North are reforming, the flanking cavalry of the Riverlands arrives to the southeast front (rear, whatever) of the Northern army. The 3 units of northern light cavalry and Robb's command unit have returned to meet them. The North's light cavalry use their light lances to provoke the enemy heavy cavalry, inflicting minor damage, and lead the Riverlanders back westward a bit, curving around the force of pike and archers behind them. The pike surrounding the archers slam into the Riverland's heavy cav, inflicting much damage. Given the pike lines were not as thick here, and much more spread out, the Riverlander horse are able to break through the pike, suffering heavy casualities. During this time the archers are firing, focusing on the light cavalry unit with the Riverlander force. Robb with his knights and light cavalryx3 see the opportunity and strike in the chaos, finishing off the Riverland's cavalry force, but suffer some heavy losses themselves. The North lost a full unit of light cavalry, and only around 300 pike and 300 archers survived the chaos.

ACT IV: The Wolf and the Fish
-------------------------------------------------
To the far north, in the forest, the hidden unit of reserve archers for the Riverlands can see the tide of the battle turn, and scramblesouthward to provide any support they can. Likewise, the Brotherhood emerges from the southern forest, scrambling northward to provide support.

Up on the summit of the hill, the Blackfish's scouts have reported of the Crannogmen in the forest, and the battle below. The Blackfish and hisknights, the crossbow unit, and half unit of pike begin a northward retreat down the hill to meet up witht he approaching archers. Unfortunately the Crannogmen have followed the pike's trail up the hill to the Blackfish, and harry them all the way down in their retreat, slowly diminishing their numbers.

Down on the plain, the remaining pike unit of the Riverlands arrives to the fray, exhausted from moving across the field on foot trailing the cavalry. As Robb's remaining two light cavalry take up their bows and harry them, the pikemen realize they have no chance, and yield.

Once the Blackfish arrives to meet their reserve archers from the north, he's lost several hundred more men to the harassing Crannogs, who do not pursue him any further once out of the forest. Brynden Tully forms up with his command unit, a few hundred pike, a fresh archer unit, and around 700 crossbowmen dig in with their pavises. The Northmen still have their archer/pike squares, now reformed but reduced in size (about 1200 men), two full light cavalry, a unit of half pike/half archers, and Robb's command.

Robb sees the advantage and strikes, leading his own knights at the enemy archers, while his light cavalry harry the pikes with their bows, while taking on some crossbow fire from the Riverlanders. The Riverland's pikes are not able to properly engage Robb and his knights while also taking fire from the bows of the North's light cavalry. The Riverland's archers are ridden down, as they and the crossbowmen together manage to take out most of a Northern light cavalry unit. As Robb's men turn southward to ride down the Brotherhood, the Blackfish sees that there is no hope to save the day, and to save the lives of his remaining men, is forced to yield to his great-nephew, The Young Wolf of the North.

VICTORY FOR THE NORTH!

Another good battle, thanks all for participating! I'll send some judging thoughts after participants have had time to read over the result.

WBT7 Final: The North (Nog) vs. The Crownlands (Captn Captn)

Setting: Rivals in the Westerlands

Battlefield Overview Image Link: http://postimg.org/image/x102str8d/full/

The North and The Crownlands find themselves at an unexpected battle in the Westerlands.

The field is home to two rival minor lords of Lord Tywin Lannister in the rural Westerlands. Tywin likes to keep his underlings competing against one another, rather than face another Castamere. These two minor houses are hosting the traveling armies of the North and the Crown. The border to their lands is separated by a dry, rocky, riverbed that runs east to west at the center of the field (as yet another Lord has dammed up the river up-stream for his own use). The riverbed is 30m wide and about 1.5m deep at it's center, rocky with sandstone. At the center of the field, 250m north and south of the neutral zone lies a fortress on each side, 200m square. The outer walls of each fortress are fortified stone, standing 3m tall. At each corner of the fortress stand 25m square stone towers, standing 3 stories tall with arrow slits on all sides. The roofs are solid and provide walls with adequate cover for archers/crossbowmen to fire below, with an entrance from the inner grounds to the interior for each. The inner grounds are uncovered, and there is a 10m wide entrance centered on each side to the outer field, consisting of fortified wood that only opens outward. At the center of each fortress is 50m square living quarters, made of solid wood, 1 story, covered with roof, with an entrance facing towards the dry riverbed at the center of the field for each side. The entire battlefield is flat, with light green representing open grassland, and dark green representing thick, brush-filled forest. Recent weather conditions have been very dry.

In a surprising turn of events, the North approaches from the north, and the Crown from the south.

Let me know of any questions regarding the field, or oversights in my description.
