Rhaenyra + Aegon = No Dance of the Dragons

Anath,

yeah, Rhaenyra was only named heir after her mother's death. I was speaking hypothetically - Baelon dies, but Aemma lives. Viserys might still have named Rhaenyra his heir because he really grow fond of her and accustomed himself to the thought of having a female heir. After all, if you train your only child to succeed you it is only natural to stick to that rather than to decide to replace once you have a son - especially if you like her, and she is smart.

Otto maneuvers in those early years may actually make more sense than we give him credit for. He was clearly afraid of Daemon and most likely feared he would eventually wear Viserys down and be named Prince of Dragonstone - possibly securing his position later by marrying Rhaenyra. Then Daemon would have been the default heir. By helping Viserys to name Rhaenyra his heir Daemon was out of the race for the time being - Daemon was humiliated by that, not showing up for Rhaenyra's installation, and only later realized that he could get closer to throne through Rhaenyra.

It is also not clear whether Aegon was later poisoned against Rhaenyra or whether the children simply overheard Alicent, Otto, and the other Hightower kin talking about Rhaenyra - children usually quickly share their parents' hatred for people.

As to Viserys' chauvinism:

The Targaryen main line only married close kin from Aegon to Viserys. If there was a time in which the Targaryens were proud of their 'superior bloodline' it would have been this era. And it actually may be the case that Baelon and Viserys were partially preferred by Jaehaerys because they came of purer incest stock - Baelon and Alyssa could have been another co-ruling couple whereas Rhaenys had a Baratheon mother and was only related to the Targaryens through Alyssa Velaryon's ancestors.

But in Laena's case he most likely rejected her because of her age and his love for Alicent. Aemma was apparently eleven when she was married to him and I imagine the idea to take another child bride at the 28 did not sit well with him.

What issue do you think he would present? I mean the main reason he was an issue was the fact that he married Rhaenyra. In this scenario, what issue would he present? Killing Aegon? Fair enough, but besides that what is he going to do that is going to lead to the Dance?

He was trying to get the IT since before he married Rhaenyra. Killing Aegon would be the easier route, preferably before he can produce a son on Rhaenyra.

Daemon never murdered a prince of the blood prior to the Dance. If he wanted to the throne so badly he could have murdered Rhaenyra in 105 when she was named heir, too, yet he did nothing of this sort. And neither did he target Alicent's sons after he married Rhaenyra later on.
