Why would the alchemists be as suicidal as Aerys?

Recommended Posts

The lower ranks were less dedicated and the ones who would bail out.  The devout would go through with it because they have already given their lives to the Wildfire.  Look at it from their eyes.  The city will fall and all of their work will be lost to the rebels.  Go out with the bang and die with your master.  There are worse ways to go.

According to Jaime "Everything was done in the utmost secrecy by a handful of master pyromancers. They did not even trust their own acolytes to help."

If that's the case, then they must have planned for one explosion to ignite the others, which is an iffy prospect when it comes to wildfire because there is no telling what it will do once ignited. But, they are the experts.

The pyromancers helped burn Rickard alive.

Ned Stark is riding to subdue the city.

And they make the unlikely yet correct assumption he's not going to murder this involved

I think it's likely Rossart would have been executed if Jaime hadn't already killed him (especially if Jaime tells the new regime why Rossart replaced the previous hand). Less sure about other pyromancers.
